RE: What will be the next trend or big thing in the NFL?
The power run game will make a comeback within the next three years and dominate for another 7-10.
Over the last 4 years cornerbacks have been the top position drafted among NFL teams. In 2012, 34 cornerbacks were chosen; in 2011, 39 corners were picked; in 2010, 33 cornerbacks; in 2009, 36 corners came off the board. Corners are great for covering spread wide out systems but lousy at stopping bruising running backs. Certain teams will start to expose this and you will see more 1500-1800 yard rushers and less 4500+ passers. Of course this is all dependent on the college game. the NFL is only as good as the players feeding into it. As recruiters look for talent they look for guys who fit their offenses. For long time the spread was popular in college so little wide receivers and spread QB's were the flavor. But pro set teams are starting to get control of the top college teams and talent. Big backs will make a comeback and CBs wont be able to stop them. Of course this is all cyclical. Once the league stocks up on LBs and DTs to stop the run the spread will come back and dominate until CBs take over again and so on. |
