RE: Updating cap numbers
I am not a follower of NFL contracts, but I am going to guess that we will re-sign both Grimes and Lofton. Both are excellent players and both will get plenty of attention from other teams. When all is said and done, I think that Lofton's pass coverage and Grimes' size will lower their contractural ceilings. My guess is that Lofton will sign for a deal that averages $5 million/year. Grimes should come in at $8 million/ year. So, that would leave about $17 million in cap space. That would leave enough cap space to sign an ultra-high profile defender, like Mario Williams and the draft class (we do not have a first round pick).
We will still need to make room for a LT signing, as well as the return of players like Bierman and DeCoud. In order to make that kind of room, we will need to part ways with players that will not likely play up to their contracts. I am thinking of guys like Baker and Turner. I know that Baker is an easy decision, but sending Turner on his way will be a very unpopular move. I think that Tuner is a fine RB that will not be worth $7.5 million next season. His carries will come down and his value to the passing game will be negligible. If we drop Turner, we will save about $5 million; if we can trade him, we will save $7.5 million. My guess is that teams will not be willing to pick up Turner's contract and wait for us to drop him. In my opinion, Snelling will be a better value at about $3 million/ year. For the sake of this discussion, we can drop Baker and Turner and gain about $8 million in cap space. If we drop Mughelli, we will have enough room to re-sign Snelling and a quality LT. Let me re-cap. We lose Baker, Turner, Mughelli and we add/keep Mario Williams, Grimes, Lofton, Snelling and an upgrade at LT. Does that sound reasonable to all of you? |

RE: Updating cap numbers
The Grimes thing doesn't bother me in the least. He is a guy that has out-played his contract for years. He has become our best CB and has gracefully accepted a significantly lower salary than Robinson. In a business that doesn't last long, that is a very tough thing to do.
The Falcons did not extend Grimes' contract, during this season. Why on earth would he want to risk screwing up his health for a front office that would toss him in a dump without hesitation. I am usually pro-team ownership, but in this case, Grimes had to protect his family's well being. The Falcons should re-sign Grimes and forget about the play offs of the past. They need to move forward and build the best team they possibly can. Now, if the FO honestly believes that the team would be better with Owens, Franks or Walls, then that is another matter. |

RE: Updating cap numbers
im forgetting about all that sat out the game... At the same notion... Those who are saying we never tried to sign Brent Grimes to a contract dont know if we didnt or didnt.. They may felt like he could get a better contract .. Normally thats what happen when someone switch agents... Especially to a agent like Tom Condon.
So i cant sit here and say Grimes quit on us dealing with the playoff game... I dont know what really happen...I also cant say the FO never tried to resign him... I dont know what really happen. I just know i hope we resign Grimes.. I think we will unless a team throw a ridiculous amount of money at Grimes. ![]()
