Remember that the money all came from the players, some outside asshole and Williams himself. Williams had nothing to hold over Payton's head. No overriding is necessary. They are claiming that Joe Gibbs had no idea it was going on in Washington. Why couldn't Williams hide it all again?

It is not a case of the DC overriding the HC. All it would take is for the DC to take it "underground" just like in Washington where Payton and Loomis felt it had been addressed.

I'm not saying this is the case, yet it is entirely possible. It would make sense for Payton and Loomis to take hit instead of admitting they were duped by Williams. It would take the pressure off of Benson and it may have even been a deal with the league.

The NFL is a corporation and will do whatever they feel is best to cover their ass. What we see and hear may not approach the truth.
