Last year he was going into his 5th season. For most QBs - the most dramatic difference in their QB maturity happens in the 5th year. Seriously, it's like night and day.

Kyle Orton was always the best QB Chicago had, they'd probably still take him over Cutler now. But at the same time, empty yards don't mean anything if you can't cash in. Great passer doesn't always mean great QB. Matt Ryan may never be an elite passer, but he's an elite QB in the making. There are other factors to consider.
