Steve Spagnuolo has agreed to become the next defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints, according to a league source.

Spagnuolo hasn't signed a contract, but it's expected to happen Thursday.
Smith: Future of NFL coaches
The one thing a successful coach needs in today's NFL is the ability to adapt. Jason Smith spies two coordinators who have it. More ...

Spagnuolo became a coaching free agent when he was fired as head coach of the St. Louis Rams on Jan 2.

He was defensive coordinator for the New York Giants for two seasons (2007-08) before coaching the Rams for the last three seasons, compiling a 10-38 record. He has an extensive defensive background, coaching on that side of the ball for eight seasons in Philadelphia under esteemed coordinator Jim Johnson.

The position in New Orleans became available when former coordinator Gregg Williams agreed to take the same position on Jeff Fisher's staff with the Rams, according to league sources. That didn't come as a surprise to Saints head coach Sean Payton, who said Tuesday it was apparent before the season ended that Williams was likely to join Fisher.

Ignorance can be educated.....Stupidity is to the bone.

Personally, I like it a lot. Many were talking about Del Rio, but from what I have heard, Spags was who Payton wanted well before Williams left. It will mean much less blitz, more four man rush with upgrades on the offensive line and in the LB corps. That loose pass coverage at the line killed us. Spags will get the CB's on top of the WR's.

I think it is a big upgrade ... as long as this off-season is spent putting the pieces in place to make it work.

RE: Spags to Aints
well this will be fun.

We'll most likely see 2 good offense and 2 good defense going at each other twice a year.

Honestly with the Nolan hire gives me confident on our Defense, or a team as whole. I have a feeling that we can step up and play to any team out there. I never had this feeling with BVG at helm.

Shit! Makes Cam a damn near wasted pick, except as a weak DT. Honestly don't see the DL fitting at this point, but I'm bitter and full of blind rage, so who knows.

RE: Spags to Aints
lets see what spags does WITHOUT pro bowlers at each spot on a D-Line.

that pretty much same D-Line beasting without him in NYG right now.

RE: Spags to Aints
It's going to be interesting to see this play out. Both those Defenses should see a spike in their play now. We know our O line will see upgrades through FA, and possibly the draft and it is very likely that outside of a corner or safety depending on the Grimes and DeCoud situation that most of the picks and or money spent in FA for the D side of the ball will be on the Line.

I think these games between NO and Atlanta are gonna be some of the best we have seen for a while.

Correction -- that's pretty much the same D-line MINUS a first ballot Hall of Famer in Strahan beasting without him in NYG right now.
