I have a Sports Illustrated magazine from 98 or 99 (somewhere in that time frame) and on the cover is the Saints fans with the paper bags.

ONE year? I don't think so. maybe the most participation was one year, (you know how those fans love a good bandwagon) but there have been bags at the stadium more than one year. I would even bet that after they won the superbowl, there were some fans that went to their closets, got their bags out and started to throw them away.....then thought about it and said "well it IS the taints, I better hold on to this, I know I'll need it again sometime in the near future" and then put it back in the safe....

Wrong. The whole paper bag deal was dreamed up by the New Orleans radio personality Buddy Diliberto back in 1980. The Saints were wrapping up the worst season ever cruising to a 1-15 finish and Buddy called fro Saints fans to boycott the games because of management's failure to properly fund the team, but the Saints fans refused to stay home. Buddy then came up with the idea of wearing a bag like the comedian "Unknown Comic" from the Gong Show. The following year, 1981, a few pockets of fans showed up in their decorated bags for a few games. The protest garnered the publicity that Diliberto wanted as those few fans got plenty of air time.

Since that year paper bags have been no more prominent at Saints games than at any number of games in sports leagues all around the world. I too remember the photo from 1999, but that was more costumes than protest.

The fact is that it was a proud moment in Saints history because it showed the commitment of the fans to their team. They refused to "not show up" and a few of them even wore the bags to demonstrate the fact that while they loved their team they would stand for ownership's lack of commitment.

Sorry, but it is a fact. The New York Times even wrote an article praising the Saints fans for their strong loyalty to the team. Do a little research. Shame was never involved. Protest was the motive by those few persons that wore the bags.
