Raiders owner Al Davis dead at age 82, team confirms
by Sam Wyche of NFL.com, contributed by The Associated Press

Quote:Al Davis, the iconic owner of the Oakland Raiders, passed away Saturday, a senior-ranking team official confirmed. He was 82.

During Davis' historic 48-year run with the Raiders, he won three Super Bowls and enjoyed 28 winning seasons, including a stretch of 16 from 1965 through the 1980.

The Raiders arrived in Houston on Friday night in preparation for Sunday's game with the Texans.

This clearly is a huge blow to the members of the franchise. In the conversation I had with a team official, he was very somber and described it as a tough time.

NFL meetings will take place in Houston on Monday and Tuesday and Davis' passing certainly will encompass the gathering of teams owners and league executives.

Davis, one of the most important figures in NFL history, is best known as a rebel, a man who established a team whose silver-and-black colors and pirate logo symbolized his attitude toward authority, both on the field and off.

It was Davis' rebellious spirit, that willingness to buck the establishment, that helped turn the NFL into the establishment in sports -- the most successful sports league in American history.

Al's gone? The NFL won't be the same.

"TOUCHDOWN! MY GOD, A TOUCHDOWN! WE THREW IT TO HAYNES! WE JUST STUFFED THEM WITH FIVE SECONDS LEFT! MY GOD ALMIGHTY, DID YOU SEE WHAT HE DID? DAVID GREENE JUST STRAIGHTENED UP AND WE SNUCK THE FULLBACK OVER! … WE JUST STEPPED ON THEIR FACE WITH A HOBNAILED BOOT AND BROKE THEIR NOSE! WE JUST CRUSHED THEIR FACE!" - Larry Munson broadcast UGA vs Tenn, 2001

Rest In Peace, Larry. You will be missed.

You know, some people would say that your comment is "low class" or "insensitive", but I think that Al Davis would have chuckled and said "just win baby."

I believe in the collective wisdom. We need uptight jerks and rebellious pricks to line up and battle each other through life. Eventually, the best truth comes out.

Al Davis was a rebel and a good one. RIP

I meant it as a complement. lol He was crazy but at one point he was a innovator, too bad he didn't change with the times. Wink

Most people (like myself) remember Al for the last few years of craziness and stupidity in the front office. With that said, he was a genius when it came to football and a pioneer to the game we love. Today, instead of remembering him for Javon Walker, JaMarcus Russell, and Darrius Heyward-Bey, I'm going to remember the pre-2000 Al Davis. Without him, who knows what the NFL would look like?

RIP Al Davis, heroes get remembered, but legends never die.

Don't worry. I posted much the same on a Saints board when someone asked what would happen to the Raiders now. I said that as sad as it was for someone to pass, there is a sizable number of Raiders fans who have been looking forward to this day.

Davis invited his competitors to kiss his ass every chance he got. He hired misfits and cultivated an atmosphere of rebellious permisiveness from his wardrobe to his felonious special teams. Business men call themselves rugged individuals and politicians call themselves rogue and maverick. Al was the real deal.

He should have a biker funeral and the his will should give the team to the winner of a bar brawl. AD, RIP.

The first play of sunday's Raider game should be a long bomb down the field, in honor of Al
