They had been considering Hue Jackson and Pat Shurmur, but instead decided to promote Mike Shula from within. Shula was the OC with tampon bay from 96-99.

The Carolina Panthers decided to go with continuity over track record when choosing their next offensive coordinator.

The Panthers have promoted quarterbacks coach Mike Shula to offensive coordinator, according to the Charlotte Observer. The team also interviewed Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur and Cincinnati Bengals assistant coach Hue Jackson for the vacant coordinator job.

Jackson, who engineered some nice offenses in Oakland, looked like the best choice from the outside. Shula has 21 years of NFL coaching experience, but struggled in a stint as Alabama head coach. He also did not do well as Tampa Bay's offensive coordinator from 1996-99.

Shula will continue to work with Cam Newton and the team's other quarterbacks. His promotion gives Newton a chance to stay in the same offensive system, with Rob Chudzinski having left for the Browns' top job. Carolina relied heavily on vertical passing.

The team also reportedly promoted Ricky Proehl to receivers coach, and interim special teams coordinator Richard Rodgers will run the special teams.

I do too. reading the comments at the bottom of the article, some of the fans there think their whole staff will be replaced next year anyway, no sense getting someone who might be good only to lose them after next year.

on another note, gregg knapp was fired by oakland as OC, we all pretty much knew that I think, just read where he was hired by the broncos to be their QB coach. How in the world does this guy keep getting jobs in the NFL?
