RE: NFC's top 10 most dynamic duos[ESPN]
I hear you, but I just disagree with your verbiage and some assessment.
We didn't have shit for passing game out of the backfield and Julio was a rookie who missed 4 games and we still put up 4200 yards passing. That proves using the words "easy to defend" just isnt anywhere close to correct when describing us. You don't get to be top 10 in passing when you're easy to defend. Just sayin. Oh, and HD is faster than 4.5x. He was running 4.3 in college, bulked up in weight for the combine and ran a 4.5 in 07 combine, and was shortly after then back down in the 4.4's. Plus the eyeball test says he's fast as hell too. |

What I mean by that is certain known defenses are already in place that handle offenses like ours pretty well (good outside guys, slow or small inside guys). Meaning DC's aren't pulling their hair out trying to defend it. So I should have said not complex, instead of easy. And we both know what will make it complex...the OC being more complex, and those guys stepping up or else bringing in a vet outside receiver. I just see so much potential if they just have one or two more cheap players that I get a little frustrated. I look at the X's and O's and think, damn, if they have a 50 catch outside receiver to put in some of those looks, DC's are going to sweat. But mainly, I value quality quantity over stars in the passing game. 4 2 receivers, 2 good TEs, and pass catching backs will outperform two star outside receivers almost every time. Give me Jennings, Driver, Jones, Nelson, Finley etc. and that's a hard offense to defend. There are about 10-12 teams that have more versatility than us in that respect, and the only way to counter that is for Julio to become Calvin Johnson. If that happens, all bets are off. Otherwise, I'm just grousing about our 4 and 5 receivers, because I think they could make this offense great (and the guys getting cut from NE are better than our 4). I think we're close. Maybe just a dual back and another receiver away...but lots of teams are getting there. A lot now have 4 to 5 valid pass catchers. |

RE: NFC's top 10 most dynamic duos[ESPN]
Said a much easier way, were I a DC, I look at a team and say "does anyone have to be double covered" and "how many guys do they have that I don't want matched up on a S or LB?" Those two questions get to the heart of it.
If I'm a DC, I don't mind a safety on HD or TG, and don't mind a safety or OLB on Snelling, Turner, Quizz. So I'm really just contending with Julio and Roddy. So our answer is 2. Two guys you don't want to have a safety on. When that answer is 4 or more (Gronk, Hernandez, Welker, Branch for instance, or Colston, Meachem, Graham, Sproles, etc, or Jennings, Driver, Jones, Finley, Nelson, Cobb) then you start to see those guys can abuse your safeties, and that means you have to play a lot of zone or complex defense to defend them. I just want the Falcons to get there, because I think they're close. But that's the question. How many guys do they have that I don't think a safety can cover (or that will really hurt me if I get a safety to cover.) |

I think you are giving way too much credit to some of Green Bay's receivers. If I was a DC the only guys I don't want a safety matched up on it Finley, Jennings, and Nelson.

I feel like all those guys are matchup issue, and each would have been a 2 in Atlanta until last year. All still would have been the 3 here last year. Regardless, you get the point. When you safety has to cover Graham or Sproles, or Welker or Lloyd, you start to have more issues. |
