This pretty much means either Lofa HAS to step up to his pre-2009 form, or we better bring in a good LB via FA like Crowder.

Well if you want to think that way. I tend to give players the benefit of the doubt until I see them on the field. Plus being named to an all rookie team gives me some hope for him. http://www.profootballweekly.com/story/permalink/30603

RE: Lofton, Saints agree to 5 year deal.
The Saints have been terrible at tackling for awhile now. At first it just seemed like a trade-off for their ball hawking style, but last year the turnovers were down as well. Lofton should help them shore up this weakness. The Saints must be hopeful that the pass rush will help cover up Lofton's coverage liabilities. Even with Lofton on board and forgetting for the moment the suspensions that are coming due, Spags certainly has his work cut out for him.
I remember that the Falcons took a NO castoff WR once and, even though he didn't do much for the Falcons, he did seem to inject some discipline on White and the rest of the receivers. Lofton may play that role for the Saints defense by showing how tackling is supposed to be done. This is likely going to be the last semi-respectful statement I ever make about CL. |

RE: Lofton, Saints agree to 5 year deal.
Seriously Guido just because someone signed with your team to get themselves money that no other team was willing to offer him does not mean that A you were able to beat off other teams with a quality presentation that put him in a place where he wanted nothing else than to be a saint. Lofton met with NO a week ago today. Says a lot that he went 2 weeks in FA without being signed. And the fact remains that Nolan clearly does not want him on his defens if the price is high because he only plans on using him 2 downs. Mike Smith and TD must either agree or really trust Nolan's judgement and see something on tape that shows this, because we still have the money to sign Lofton. It seems insane that we have chosen to hold on to Baker and Ovie at present, instead of using their money to get Curtis at his price.
Our front office has been often criticised for wanting to stick by our guys. But this is an example of where I feel it hasn't compromised and will ultimately benefit our team. I think the possibility of us signing a LB in the draft could still happen but I think it would have to happen in the 2 nd. That being said we have Dent who coming out of college actually had better Tackle stats than Lofton as well as in a few other categories. I know we speak about Nolan calling the shot in this, but the insurance for losing Lofton has been here a year already has worked with him and the rest of the defense and learned from them in the pro game. He'll now have to do it under a system Nolan presents. But I think the signing of Lofa means we will be working between the two. An another note there is a saying "life has a way of humbling you down". Your obnoxiousness and arrogance is reflective of your franchise. A franchise fan base that has done only a little more than ours has but seems to think they are the greatest in the world for it. All this talk of the saints becoming a dynasty after one Superbowl win. Too much hype and not enough substance. The eagles traded for Demeco Ryans a linebacker I consider better and more complete than Lofton is despite loving what Lofton can do. But let's face it the likelihood is NO offered Lofton more than other teams wanted to pay him because it's likely that Vilma is going to get the hammer dropped on him soon. And the team does not have a pick until the 3rd round so they can't wait to address it there and they have no one in their depth they can trust to step up. So quit acting as though on day one of FA you snapped him up from underneath us and screwed us. |

RE: Lofton, Saints agree to 5 year deal.
If we don't sign any FA's off other teams this year, that's 2 comp picks we're looking at so far. Tatupu and Manawai were not on any teams and they're our only additions so far.
Lofton will surely get us a 4th round comp pick and Weems at least a 5th, maybe even a 4th also considering he was a pro-bowler ST guy 2 years in a row. This could really help our draft next year. |
