And yes, BVG was getting fired. Use your head. If his job was secure and he had nothing to worry about, then why did he line up a new job in "college" within days of the season ending?? Are you going to sit here and try to tell us that it was 100% his decision and had nothing to do with him feeling the heat?

Our defense was middle of the road or slightly below average because of him, and I don't mean in a good way. His schemes sucked balls and everyone knows this. Our defense would have likely been so much better in a different scheme with the quality of players we have. Luckily we'll get to see what I'm referring to this year with Nolan.

And Dent was a tackling machine in college just as much as Lofton was, especially if you factor in that he played in the SEC on top of that.

Dent: 4.74 40, 24 bench reps, 37.5 vert leap, 123" broad jump
Lofton: 4.79, 23 bench reps, 24.5 vert leap, 105 broad jump

I just blatantly disagree with people and sometimes I think people parrot common opinion rather than base it on anything. If you have a problem with what I say, just say it, fine, but it isn't personal for me. I'm not sitting around thinking people are dumb-asses or trying to be insulting. I don't even read the poster's name half the time when I respond.

Why would BVG be fired when we had just signed an extension, and we were in the upper half of the league in points and yards allowed, not to mention his defense did well in the play-offs? Are you telling me that Dent is just as good as Lofton in every way? If he's a Lofton clone, how is he an improvement?

I believe it was the players over compensating for the lack of brilliant play calling on BVG's part. Same could be said for MM. You don't go to the playoffs with the same coaches and blow it every time. And you don't lose to the Saints every time you play them if you want to keep your job.

Blank was fed up and he needs to see improvement this season else Smitty is next. You can't stare at the field and keep signing paychecks for an unpleasant performance. Those 2 were gone.

And no, I'm not excited about Koetter either, but at least its something new.

The fact that BVG signed an extension last year and still left the NFL to go to college should be even more evidence on my side that he was getting fired, not the other way around. Your logic is flawed my friend.

If the Falcons wanted to keep Lofton they would have resigned him. The fact is he was very good at times and at others merely ok. I have nothing but admiration for the guy but couldn't you have signed somewhere else?

There has to be a reason why someone so well regarded by the press as a top free agent waited so long to sign. I don't believe that Tatupu and Dent are steps down. If anything Dent is a clone of Lofton. He's a smart 3rd round pick with nearly identical measurements.

The fact is if Nolan thought he was good enough to play on this team he would have been resigned, see Abe. But he wasn't and the team will be better not because of this but in spite of it.

Like Michael Haynes, Lofton will come crawling back down the road.

So the only explanation is that he was going to get fired? Come on man.

I think that he will continue to improve his pass coverage and could, someday, become the pro bowler we had hoped for. We just can not afford to throw big money at a guy that can not cover well. We could not get our defense off the field, even on third and long situations. Lofton is not soley to blame, but it was habit to see easy completions in the middle of the field. Lofton was often responsible for that coverage and he often let us down. We need LB's that can cover better.

Good luck Curtis.....except when you face us.

I don't wish any rival in the NFC South good luck!! We are competing for a division title!

I agree with Beef, it was pretty much common knowledge. I remember hearing a brief leak that said something to the effect that Blank told the both of them to start looking for opportunities for their future after the New Orleans game.
