The truth of the matter is this - and Rad touched on it earlier - if Tebow's religion of choice was Islam or Hindu or Scientology or Paganism, his constant proselytizing would be branded as religious extremism. Nobody would be saying, "You gotta respect that guy for the sincerity of his beliefs." In fact, the overwhelming sentiment toward him would be the exact opposite of respect, and it would be unmerciful.
Now, if Timmy wants to believe that there's an invisible man living in the sky (credit to the late, great George Carlin) who has magical powers and a vested interest in whether or not he is successful playing a children's game, more power to him. But he has nobody to blame but himself when he experiences backlash for constantly steering the conversation toward that belief. Claiming to have a special relationship with a god is the height of human arrogance, IMO. No, I don't have to respect such vainglorious posturing. |
