I know should not matter but,
Quote:This is Smitty's last year to prove that he deserves to be the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Rubbish and I can guarantee you that anyone inside the organization with an opinion that matters concurs. I've even heard Arthur Blank talk about the last time the Falcons ownership thought a coach had plateaued, Leeman Bennett, after the 1982 season and a playoff berth, including 3 of the previous 5 seasons, but they let him go, brought in Dan Henning and for the next decade the Falcons had the worst stretch in their history which is saying something. Blank is not stupid and he's no BS artist either. He continuously preaches continuity, he's not going to get impatient and blow things up, just not gonna happen. |

I believe Smitty bought some time with the new coaches and coordinators. I may even be willing to take a stepback if it means we can bounce back and go further than this organization has been in the past. New schemes may lead to problems early on in the season but if we finish strong I would not have a problem with that. The reason I think the new coordinators help is because they keep his message from getting old. The players are not going to start tuning him out. But the year after this one he will probably start hereing the mumble from the locker room and he will reach that Tony Dungy status and his message will start to fall on deaf ears. I am kind of intrigued by where we would go if we move on. Tampa went from the calm cool Dungy to the fiery Chucky to the players Raheem Moore, to a disciplinarian now. I think we would have to go for Coughlin type disciplinarian if we move on from coach. I think the guys like Smitty but they may need a guy they hate but respect to get over the hump. ![]()
