If the team had fired Payton, and promoted Vitt to HC, would you be saying the same thing? That's what it is. The guy is fired for a season. You don't cut loose a HC like that and not expect to feel a serious impact.

No. If they had fired Payton and moved Vitt to head coach I would expect as much success. Payton would not have been involved in any of the off-season planning. Vitt would also most likely run things his way and I doubt that would in the long run be as effective.

But the fact is that Payton isn't fired for the year. He was intricately involved during the off-season. Vitt has said that he is not taking over as head coach. He is only fulfilling his duties as assistant head coach and everything will be run just as Payton has always directed.

Will there be an impact? Sure, but not as serious as you hope.
