This is the towel that Vick is using.

Thanks Guido, i had not seen the update.
I agree, if it was the towel, SD can't be punished until the NFL makes a ruling on it. Using it after that, however....

I can't believe the NFL never knew about this previously, with teams using these for years.

Perhaps the powers that be in the NFL aren't as all powerful and all knowing as they would lead us to believe.

You are actually taking the wrong side of my statement. It wasn't "how did they not know?" but 'they knew" I was inferring. Players get fined for anything not pre-approved by the NFL, and nothing hits that sideline without approval from marketing, so these towels running rampant without notice is absurd (but easy to feign ignorance of, like Vilma is doing).

SD won't get in trouble. The NFL has let this go. It was just not mentioned, and avoided. Until an official made this move, it would have continued to go on, undisclosed. Now, the NFL is forced to act, and it will be interesting if they "ban" it and act shocked, or state they were aware, and that it passes muster, as the towels are actually not that bad.

Now all that is out the window if SD used the towels as a cover for putting further substances on the towel and trying to claim it was the towel itself, which could be the case, and would be cheating, regardless.

I think the towels themselves would be allowed (and actually have been, thus the silence), but the ability to "alter" the towels may make the NFL ban them to prevent further tampering and assisting by making the process of actual cheating easier to mask.

Agreed. The NFL can't bring the hammer down on the Chargers since reportedly every team uses the same towels and have for years now.

The NFL should punish the saints for using the towels, even if they didn't.

Vilma had all his towels directly deposited into his account, so it couldn't have been him! No way he could get access to a towel otherwise!

• Uh, oh, another fumble by Chargers running back Ryan Mathews. You know what that means. San Diego probably forgot to pack the sticky towels.
