I'm sure that the owners' side in the new contract gave the NFL Commissioner the power to discipline players for conduct detrimental to the game.

The courts and the NFLPA have no say in this matter.

Actually, the NFLPA does have a say in the matter if they so choose. It could get ugly. Why do you think they have brought in the lawyers? It is to make sure that the league (Goodell) doesn't do to the players what he did to Payton.
