He is just merely average. There is nothing special about him. Maybe someday he will be Alex Smith good but until then he is nothing more than average. It doesn't matter if he can run. Smith could run too.

Harbaugh is an ex-QB and is used to being the center of attention. With Alex Smith playing so well the center of focus was starting to switch from Harbaugh to Smith. Coach Harbaugh couldn't abide that and so he created a QB controversy in order to put the spotlight back on himself.
