My Brent Grimes Rant
I've never seen a guy under a bigger microscope by a fanbase than this guy. Since he was benched early in the year last year, the guy has done nothing but steadily improve and ball his ass off.

Yet every week a decent portion of the fans are wanting to give his job to Chris Owens.

I mean, when QBs even throw at Grimes now, they are throwing nothing but comebacks and quick slants, and not even having good success with those.

But if he does give up a couple of 9 yard hooks to an All Pro like Fitzgerald, people feel the need to point it out that he did so? Even if the score is 34-7 Falcons at the time and the defense is intentionally playing soft.

And any time the Falcons give up a big play - it's Grimes fault. It doesn't matter if Grimes lined up on the far side of the field and chased the guy all the way down and missed on a diving tackle attempt after the guy had blown through the whole defense - it's Grimes fault.

People blame him on the Mendenhall run, and unfortunately D. Ledbetter fueled that fire, but that is wrong as well. Peterson got blown out of his gap on that play, the RB went inside of him, Lofton was nowhere to be seen, and the safeties had both either made bad decisions or taken bad angles - but it must have been all Grimes fault.

Fortunately I know the coaches can see how he is playing, and dude is locked in at LCB.

But still, it kind of irritates me.

And that's all I have to say about that.

Personally I like the idea of an athletic corner like Grimes being are number 2 guy. He makes interceptions and we need that, as whilst I think Dunta will take care of business on his side of the field he seems to be a knock it down knock them out style guy rather than a ball hawk. I think leaving someone like Owens in the slot is good when it comes to things like blitzes and laying the wood on some of the nippy slot receivers who might be shifty but aren't always up to taking a hit.

I think I would be happier knowing that the Coaching staff would make an adjustment if a team purposely lines their number one up against Grime-Time and tries to pick on him and does so with success that we would set Dunta to match corner on the number one, leaving Grimes on the next significant threat. Or alternatively bring Owens into the LCB spot because of his physical play and move Grimes to match on a slot guy.

I'd like to make it clear I have absolutely no problem with Grimes, I just want to see flexibility in adjusting to anything the O might do to create mismatches against our unit.

With Grimes and Owens I feel that it is the good version of pick the poison. Both guys do different things well and better than one another.

So Smitty didn't say that Grimes was out of position? It was Ledbutt?

"TOUCHDOWN! MY GOD, A TOUCHDOWN! WE THREW IT TO HAYNES! WE JUST STUFFED THEM WITH FIVE SECONDS LEFT! MY GOD ALMIGHTY, DID YOU SEE WHAT HE DID? DAVID GREENE JUST STRAIGHTENED UP AND WE SNUCK THE FULLBACK OVER! … WE JUST STEPPED ON THEIR FACE WITH A HOBNAILED BOOT AND BROKE THEIR NOSE! WE JUST CRUSHED THEIR FACE!" - Larry Munson broadcast UGA vs Tenn, 2001

Rest In Peace, Larry. You will be missed.

That is correct. All Smith said is that it was a "misfit". Ledbetter used his extensive knowledge of football strategy and made his own assumption he was talking about Grimes.

I agree with you Peyton. Personally, I think Grimes is one of the better cornerbacks we have. The guy has a lot of talent, and he's a go-getter. If he runs across field and chases a guy down after a catch, but doesn't make the tackle, who cares. You don't see too many other guys running to the opposite side of the field on any given play.

RE: My Brent Grimes Rant
I think Owens and Grimes are starters on 50% of the team in the league, so I could care less which one starts.
But Owens is still very young, where I think Grimes is close to his CB peak.

So I am kinda happy for Grimes, but I wouldn;t be mad if the coaches chose Owens.

I perfer the right person for the right situation.

RE: My Brent Grimes Rant
I think it's more to do with Owen's balling as opposed to Grimes playing bad. Owen's has three interceptions in his last 4 games. He can also lay the wood, which seems to fit with what we want in our DB's.

Was disappointed that Grimes could not stop Hightower on his 80 yarder.

RE: My Brent Grimes Rant
I don't see why people would want to see Owens start over Grimes. Why start an unproven guy in his second season over a guy who had 6 INT's last year and been locking everyone down so far this year?

Owens can start for Dunta though. Smile
