Mike Peria the Zebra Breaks Down the Dunta Hit
Quote:1. Atlanta at Philadelphia

THE SITUATION: Philadelphia led 14-0 in the second quarter, with the ball third-and-6 at the Atlanta 32.

Our rules expert Mike Pereira breaks down all the big decisions HERE.
THE PLAY: Kevin Kolb's pass to DeSean Jackson fell incomplete, but Jackson took a vicious hit from Atlanta cornerback Dunta Robinson. Unnecessary roughness was ruled on Robinson, and both Robinson and Jackson were injured.

MY TAKE: This is a real tough play for a defender going full speed at the receiver. Robinson didn't launch, but he did lower his head and made contact on what appeared to be on the left shoulder.
Jackson is considered defenseless as the pass was incomplete, and as a defender, Robinson is not allowed to lower his head and contact Jackson anywhere on his body. I'm not sure what you tell a defender to do in that situation, but we have to avoid these types of hits that create the injuries that result from them. The NFL will continue to look at these types of actions to try to eliminate these injuries. Robinson and others are going to have to lead with their shoulders and not their heads.

Not as dirty as some fans are making it out to be, but not as clean as other fans are making it out to be. It's not like Dunta was trying to give both of them concussions or anything. Seems accidental to me, and Peria had similar sentiments.

I'm going to have to watch it again. I'm all for limiting injuries, but at some point, you gotta let the guys play the f'n game.

RE: Mike Peria the Zebra Breaks Down the Dunta Hit
It's obvious that Dunta made contact with his shoulder, the pass was incomplete because Dunta made the hit at the perfect time and knocked the ball out.

Let the guys play the damn game. Ronnie Lott is a HOFer, and if you go back and look at his career, I'm sure 75% of hits are liken to Duntas. Let them play the f'n game

Sorry. Video is available in the link I forgot to add:

Nevermind. That video is so shitty I think I spotted big foot. Don't think you will get anything definitive other than one blurry angle.

Basically he's saying what the announcers said, and what everybody else saw. Dunta did NOTHING wrong. He did what he is paid to do - HIT the Ball Carrier.

YOU CANNOT STOP these types of plays. THIS IS FOOTBALL. Hits like that are going to happen. Dunta should NEVER have been flagged for that.

I agree. Sometimes the officials need to let the players play.

RE: Mike Peria the Zebra Breaks Down the Dunta Hit
As I saw it, Dunta lowered his head but also moved it to the side, away from Jackson. I think he did it deliberately and I think it was the only thing he could do to lessen the severity of the collision. His helmet struck Jackson's right shoulder but the real damage was done by Dunta's shoulder striking Jackson high on the chest. There was only glancing helmet-to-helmet contact and only because Jackson's head snapped downward on the initial contact. Frankly, I don't even know how you call 'defenseless receiver' in this case, since Jackson had the ball and was facing the tackler. But what really chaps my ass is the number of commentators calling this a cheap shot and suggesting the only way to end this kind of thuggery is to suspend the defender. During the night game we had Dan Patrick calling it helmet-to-helmet, Rodney fucking Harrison, the king of cheap shot artists, calling for a suspension, and Tony Dungy doing his grinning monkey impression and agreeing with it all.

RE: Mike Peria the Zebra Breaks Down the Dunta Hit
I dont understand the penalty, the guy had the ball and Dunta hit him (well they ran into each other) and knocked the ball loose. Isnt that what he is meant to do? The concussions (did Dunta get one?) were unfortunate but not directly related to helmet to helmet, just coz someone gets concussed doesnt mean they were hit in the head. Heck might aswell just make it flag football so that Goodell can get his 56-47 shootouts every week without losing his 'star' players -_-

Loved the hit, didnt like the injuries and having had a concussion playing rugby its not fun so wish the guys a speedy recovery.

The refs had no choice but to throw a flag. It was a clean hit, but it was probably the hardest hit this year on anyone.
