It was Off Pass interference

RE: It was Off Pass interference
Two questions:
1) Was the ball in the air yet during contact?
2) Can illegal contact be called on the Receiver?

Thanks if anyone knows definitively.

RE: It was Off Pass interference
It was a blown call. Roddy should have been flagged. I do think the refs were a little generous and lenient with us last night. I wonder if any of that had to do with the fact that Goodell was in attendance. It always makes better television when the home team wins, esp. on last minute drives.

Im starting to also wonder if we may be getting the "Saints treatment" that the Saints got last year. That maybe someone "upstairs" wants to get the Falcons to the SB this season. Get Matt Ryan's "star" shining brighter because Peyton and Brady and his generation arent going to be relevant for too many more years. Ryan is the perfect face for the next generation of the NFL. And The Falcons are a model franchise in this league. Great owner, coaching staff and players who dont get in much trouble. Atlanta has a very strong, solid organization that exemplifies everything Goodell wants representing his league. It makes some sense.

I made you a tin foil hat, Jedi. Smile

I'm rewatching the game tomorrow. Will answer HD's question then. I still think it was a good no-call.

RE: It was Off Pass interference
You are taking what he said out of context, but it really doesnt matter.

There are hand battles every week between DBs and WRs. The guy tried it with Roddy when the game was on the line and paid the price. It can be debated ad nauseum whether the contact by the DB should have been flagged, whether Roddy brushing him off should have been flagged, or whether Roddy would have made the catch anyway.

The fact is, neither of them were flagged for their contact. Instead of staying with Roddy the DB tried to sell an interference call that he initiated. It didnt work and we won.

This is precisely how I remember it, watching live and on the replays right after. I'm going to watch again tomorrow, well, later today at this point. But I think you nailed it there RnB.

RE: It was Off Pass interference
Roddy should not have been called. The db went low and committed towards Roddy and initiated the contact. Roddy was putting his arm sour and there was little contact. That db mostly tripped and fell trying to get back into coverage the way he was supposed to. The db was at fault, not White. The ref made a good no call either way.

RE: It was Off Pass interference
IF you actually look at the play it doesnt look like OPI it looks like the DB was putting his hands on RODDy to check him, and Roddy did a kinda SWIM technique. the DB feel lookin to get the call. nice acting scrub but the official didnt buy it.

RE: It was Off Pass interference
Let's see what the official NFL rulebook says...

Actions that constitute offensive pass interference include but are not limited to:

(a) Blocking downfield by an offensive player prior to the ball being touched.

( b ) Initiating contact with a defender by shoving or pushing off thus creating a separation in an attempt to catch a pass.

( c) Driving through a defender who has established a position on the field.

Actions that do not constitute offensive pass interference include but are not limited to:

(a) Incidental contact by a receiver’s hands, arms, or body when both players are competing for the ball or neither player is looking for the ball.

( b ) Inadvertent touching of feet when both players are playing the ball or neither player is playing the ball.

( c ) Contact that would normally be considered pass interference, but the ball is clearly uncatchable by involved players.

Note 1: If there is any question whether player contact is incidental, the ruling should be no interference.

Clearly, the correct (non) call was made.

RE: It was Off Pass interference
The Falcons have gotten the short end of the ref's stick for decades. We have lost many games on questionable calls. I feel absolutely no remorse or shame in taking this win. For those that need to come to grips with this, let's take a look at the calls in question.

Face mask. This was the one true gift. Both players were clearly grabbing face masks. No question about it. The Ravens got caught and the play gave us a much needed first down. I think that it boiled down to the refs' angles of vision. We got lucky.

Finger tip catch. I saw this as a reception. Jenkins had control of the ball before he went out of bounds. If a defender had been close to him and pushed him, I doubt MJ would have been able to make that play. However, Jenkins severely beat his man and made a great catch. I see no controversy here. BTW, that was a perfect pass from Ryan.

Offensive Interference. Roddy was single covered on this play...big mistake. Had the Ravens been smart, they would have blanketed Roddy with a CB and a Safey. Douglas and Jenkins would not have beaten the Ravens. Having said that, Roddy made his cut to the sideline and was hand fighting with the defender. At the cut, Roddy did push off and caught the defender off balance. The defender fell to the ground and the rest is history.
How many times have we seen this go against us? We have had small CB's for years and we have lost many hand battles. Can anyone say that Mason did not do a little pushing in the end zone just before he scoered on Grimes? Come on guys, this sort of thing happens all the time. TO has made a living on that kind of things for years. And TO is not allone.
This was a great play by Roddy and a well deserved TD.

So, there we are. The Falcons finally caught a break from the Refs. Amazing. And now, some of you are feeling remorseful? Chile, please!
