...but he mentioned that the Vikings weren't planning on franchising Ray Edwards.
Their focus has been on keeping Rice in a Vikes' uniform. I hope we go after him because he adds another high motor opposite Abraham.

We have a much better interior DL than the Vikings do so if Edwards was opposite Abe, I could easily see him getting 10 sacks. Edwards is only 26 too. We could lock him up for a while & not have to worry at all about one of our ends for a while. I really hope we go after him.

The two Vikings starting DTs have 9 Pro Bowl appearances between them and are generally regarded as one of the greatest tandems of all time. I think they are the only defense to lead the NFL in rush defense 3 years in a row. Pat Williams is getting old, but I'm not really seeing where you are coming from there. I think most people in the league see Edwards as being the benficiary of bieng the one guy nobody on the offense is really scheming for. |

The Vikings have arguably the best interior D-line in the game. Kevin Williams is the best 4-3 defensive tackle ever since Haynesworth gave up on himself, and Pat Williams is still a top 10 tackle in the game even at his age. With Jared Allen getting attention on the other side, there is no way Edwards would thrive more in Atlanta. Now I'm not saying I don't want him, but that I don't think he'll get 10 sacks with Abraham being our main guy in terms of sacks. Yeah I obviously didn't say that right, I was in a hurry. I really meant our interior DL is better at "pass rushing" at this moment, which was obviously the topic. Stopping the run is clearly different. If your DT's are pressure/sack threats, it will help the DE's on the outside with their pass rush is what I was implying. Kevin Williams is HoF great, I know this. But he's gone down in sacks/pressures/hits every year since he started except one. And last year he had 1 sack. He also had fewer pressures & hits on QB's in 2010 than Babs who had 4 sacks. I'm not trying to compare them & say Babs is all around better, that would be silly. But the stats suggest he's at least better at getting to the QB, which certainly does help our DE's. And Pat Williams isn't "getting old", he IS OLD. Dude will be "39" this year & he had less tackles, less pressures, less QB hits, & less sacks than Peters did this year. And by less sacks, I mean zero. He was great in the past, but in 2010 both our starting DT's were better than him in every category. I don't care what they did in the past & probowl invites don't mean everything. Babs had a monster 2009 & got snubbed & Abe had a monster 2008 & got snubbed. It's a popularity contast sometimes. Edit: Oh yeah, & incase you didn't know, Pat & Kevin will very likely be suspended for at least 4 games in 2011 for failing drug tests. Pat is also getting elbow surgery this offseason & Kevin just got done getting knee surgery as well. |

With Allen on the outside and the Williams Wall in the middle, Ray was literally a 4th option for offensive lineman to worry about. Before last year, both Jared Allen and Kevin Williams required a double team, and Pat Williams was a wrecking ball up the middle. Babineaux is a good defensive tackle, but he certainly isn't elite. Abraham isn't getting younger, and Corey Peters still hasn't shown to me that he's a sure fire starter at DT. So in 2010, where Babs had more sacks, pressures, & hits than Kevin, and Peters had more everything than Pat, and Abe had more sacks, pressures, & hits than Allen, you're saying Edwards would have done worse with us? Ok, well I disagree. Pat is going to be 39 & Abe is going to be 33, yet you guys toss out the "Abe isn't getting any younger" comments, as if after a 13 sack season, he's washed up or something. So yeah, my opinion is, Edwards would do better here than in Minn. He's only 26 & gotten better every year while Kevin & Pat have gotten worse each year. We're on the upswing, Minn is on the downswing. |

Ray Edwards would be a huge risk. Sidney Rice would be the Viking we need to aquire this offseason.
