I cringe everytime I see Clay Mathews dominate and wonder why TD did not draft him?

Clay Mathews was at it again last night - dominating the Cowboys - the guy is a freak making plays all over the field.

I remember that Thomas Dimitroff showed interest in Mathews and we brought him in for a workout - I thought that Clay Mathews was the best pick for the Falcons when we were on the clock back in 2009 - alas it did not happen and Falcons drafted Peria Jerry.

I have not given up on Jerry and he still may be a nice player - but Clay Mathews is one of those rare "difference makers" on a team and he would have looked great in "Falcon Red".

I remember at some point TD addressing Clay Mathews as a player and he just felt that Clay was a poor "scheme fit" for Falcons - which means I guess that he thought Mathews skills were best suited as a 3-4 OLB - and that is what Mathews plays in Packers D.

Still,........damn that guy is good - i think he would have been very good in any defense - the guy is a star.......

Good point, but his college history isn't the type that Dimitroff usually drafts. Matthews was a one season starter at USC, and had plenty of question marks coming into the draft. Plenty of other teams missed out on Clay. Hindsight would demand he be the top pick, or at worst 2nd overall.

Yeah, I remember you and I constantly screaming on AFMB how bad we wanted this guy to be a Falcon. I am still not sold on Jerry...he hasn't done anything.

in all fairness to Jerry, whom I wasn't a big fan of that pick either, but he is a big dude, and i'm of a mind that it will take longer for him to be all the way back from knee surgery. some of it's mental too, just be patient and lets give him time.

Check out his jaw and his brow line. Compare it to his freshman photo at USC and you'll have your answer. The one thing I'll say in Matthews favor is that he's smarter than Cushing.
