RE: How many sacks did we whiff on?
I think this is a problem for us because of BVG's defensive philosophy.
We were probably one of the least blitzing teams in the league while also playing that shitty soft cover 5-7 yard cushion bend but don't break style & I firmly believe those two things are a recipe for being ridiculously predictible. Think about what an opposing QB has to read when looking at our defense every down.... If our guys are outside the box, well they very likely aren't blitzing because they're outside specifically for the purpose of getting in position to cover their soft zone assignment area. And if they're in the box, they're likely rushing, otherwise they just put themselves that much further away from a coverage zone. It really seemed that simple I think. There's really not a lot of other ways to explain why we always gave up so much passing yardage & why QB's always seemed to have this 6th sense like they knew exactly who our outside blitzer was which made it easier to avoid them. "Oh, Brian Williams is in the box on my right side, I know he's blitzing so I'll just scoot up & left in the pocket to avoid him." I swear I would bet that's how it happened. So yeah, again I blame BVG for creating those telegraphed predictible plays & having a philosophy that ultimately works against itself. I don't put near as much blame on the actual players because I think they've all showed clear periods of extreme athleticism, instinct, & talent. It just makes more sense to pin inconsistency on the style & playbook as a result. |

I'm not a fan of the off coverage that our corners are playing more than half the time it seems. It is just too easy for an offense to get a quick 5 yards every time, then just dink and dunk down the field.

I don't think we get enough pressure up front for the positioning of our corners on the field. We need some help. Throw character out the window when it comes to bringing people in, I think we have enough good guys that can help influence labeled bad apples to move in the right direction. |

I would agree that our overall pass rush is inadequate. Abe is our only consistent threat and if he gets double teamed I don't have faith in the of the other 3 players to pick up the slack all the time. The problem is that acquiring a very good DE is very tough to do, I equate it to getting a very good QB. You have to either draft him or pay through the roof for someone just above average. Personally I would love to get Charles Johnson in FA from the Panthers but I'm 95% sure that they won't let him get away, so that leaves us with the draft and hope for the best. That's why I think we should trade up in the 1st round and get the best DE possible.
