The two big runs were misfits and the teams just did a good job capatilizing on our mistakes and sealing off. I'm pretty sure we won't see those happen anymore. Through the 18 games (since smith brought in his defensive guys) it's safe to say we have one of the better run ds in the league. Mistakes happen

EVERYONE in the front seven was blocked both times. They were stopping multiple defenders both times. You need that reversed to two blocks for at least one down lineman. That free's up the linebackers. Sorry Knight, but I really don't think you know what really happened in these 2 plays if you're trying to say they were the same mistake, because they most definitely were not. Vs. the Steelers, they simply beat back Trey Lewis, pushing him into Coleman. Grimes was on the outside tied up with a receiver, Mendenhall followed patiently behind his tackle & made a hard cut inside. Lofton was blocked & dove for his legs but missed & Coleman was pushed to the outside. Mendenhall made the right cut & our guys just got beat up. Vs. Arizona, it was a completely different set. They only had 1 receiver, Fitz, & he was on the opposite side, the wide side. And Grimes was also lined up on the wide side next to Spoon just off the line. It was a bad call by BVG. We had NOBODY on the short side to make the play. Hightower cut around the end which was blocked & there was just nobody there. Grimes ran from the opposite side of the field & almost made the play. One we got beat/pushed back, the other we just didn't have anyone in position to defend that exact play. Both can be corrected once film is watched & BVG understands the mistakes. But 2 plays out of 2 different sets with 2 entirely different causes does not make an unrecoverable pattern of weakness. That's silly. |

They did their jobs, according to you. |

RE: Great Game, Learned Alot
I think Babs was still a little rusty, IMO. We all saw the difference btw what DRob did game 1 vs. what he did game 2. I think we can expect similar results from Babs. He was just getting into game shape. Our entire D was just fast Sunday. There were a few miscues here and there, but all-in-all we were vicious. I love what I am seeing from Spoon and Moore. Sunday will certainly be a tough test. One advantage that we have is the Saints coming back from the West Coast on a short week, from a game that will be a lot more physical this week than what we saw last week out of SanFran. Time will tell all.
This is my signature. |

If you hit the weakside of the formation, get the outside seal, and then get a good block against the secondary you can go pretty far. It was different from the Pittsburgh run, where they simply over loaded one side of the field and we didn't adjust properly. Having Trey Lewis didn't help, and he weighs 320. Grady Jackson didn't do much for our run defense either. Execution, execution, execution. |

Maybe its my explanation, maybe its Kool-Aid, maybe its a little of both. I'm guessing its the Kool-Aid though. (09-20-2010 04:04 PM)Radical Wrote: Not an excuses. Henry Thomas was a VERY good nosetackle and weighed 275lbs. Its not just in execution and/or size. Its a style of play. All of our DT's are 2 gap players, NONE are nosetackles in style of play. You don't see it now, but you will. The same thing HAPPENED twice or else what happened? How does a formidable DL get gashed two weeks in a row? No anchor taking up more than one block. |

RE: Great Game, Learned Alot
Ok you're right KoG. Not sure what Arizona was thinking. They should have just run that play Hightower scored on over & over the rest of the game. They would have obviously scored on us every time they ran it because we can't defend it. Not sure why we didn't lose to both the Steelers & Cards by 100 points. Our defense apparently sux.
You should give BVG a call & let him know. |
