For us to have a GREAT defense..we need to move on from DOME
I understand you can have a dome team and have a solid defense. In 98' our defense was solid . The Rams even when there were known more for there potent offense had a solid defense and the Colts Super Bowl same with Saints but they can never back it up back to back but with that being said playing in the dome has the disadvantages and you never see consistent defense mentality . Opposing teams dont mind come into the dome . Yea its loud and we do have that home field advantage of noise but teams dont mind coming into these conditions especially if they play there games outside in cold weather. Plus there are teams like Packers/Saints
Also we are not built like a dome team . we dont have that team speed /big play makers Saints/Colts and even Rams do . Even on defense our team is solid vs run and we are able to run . We would be a perfect outside weather team . ![]() I'm delusional from our playoff loss against GB . Don't take me seriously until year 2413 . - Added by Phocis because of this post. Warned here. While I agree coaches/scheme and players make the hug difference so does the element . Pitt/Ravens/Bears all benefit from playing outside where opposing teams sometimes face adverse conditions ![]() I'm delusional from our playoff loss against GB . RE: For us to have a GREAT defense..we need to move on from DOME
I agree, I think our style of offense is much better suited for an outdoor / grass stadium. I think the organization is seeking to rectify this situation but unfortunately it won't be anytime soon. I don't see them changing philosophies either so we are just stuck with it and will have to make the best of it. I certainly don't like the idea of teams like the packers coming in and having our home field play to their strengths, but that's the reality. Even if we had a setup like Arizona it would be improvement, at least it's grass instead of turf (and we could always use hoses to saturate it into a muddy mess if we needed to
![]() As for the defense, it's kinda hard to knock someone into the dirt when there is no dirt! Maybe you're right, maybe there is a mindset or mentality that goes along with playing in the elements. Just another thing for us to overcome. Personally, I enjoy outdoor games much better, weather be damned. The dome always seems kinda dark to me. But if we get some playmakers / speed guys it will at least improve the situation. Currently we are too plodding and pedestrian to be playing at least 10 games per year inside. |

(01-20-2011 03:15 PM)Swift Is a Die Hard Wrote: lol @ youshow me where i said you were blaming the loss on the dome??? you lost me there. focus swifty, we're talking about overall defense, not losing one game. as for show you back to back dome teams with a top defense...ok what stats do you want? I can give you one for total game stats, Minnesota has had a top ten defense for the last three years if you go to NFL.com and look at reg season game stats. we could pick apart each category i guess and make arguments either way in an endless supply of individual stats. My thoughts are we've been called a 'plodding' team, pedestrian, sluggish....insert any other adjective for slow. and we play in a dome, where it's supposed to make ya faster, if we moved outside, we'd only play slower??? personally i like the retractable roof type stadium. i would like to see us get OFF the 'turf', i think there's more injuries on the 'turf' but i'm too lazy to go look up those stats for sure. either way, people blaming the dome for our poor defense to me is silly. it's the players, coaches scheme.... does it give an advantage to 'outdoor' teams coming inside??? i would think that would only matter if we had to play our part of the game outside, while they were inside. it doesn't matter where you play the game, both teams are on the same field. with that in mind, you saying that when Pitt/Ravens/Bears play a team, they're not outside in those adverse conditions with them? did you watch the Pats/Bears game this year?? I know you're going to say but the pats play outside too, either way, both teams were out in that weather, the snow the wind the rain the sloppy field, were the same for both teams. and the bears were beat down in chicago, and they have one of the top defenses in the league this year. Chew on THAT, Petunia!

RE: For us to have a GREAT defense..we need to move on from DOME
good point on Minny defense Chaz but I never look at them as dominating defense but they are solid year after year . I just look at Pitt/Ravens defense i know they have great personel on defense and always are building on defense and now even the Packers defense is showing signs of being great defense .
Another thing is 3/4 scheme Jets Pitt Balt Green Bay all use attacking LBS . I always loved the 3/4 and when Wade Phillips ran it / I think its the most effective defense ![]() I'm delusional from our playoff loss against GB . I agree that this team is better built to be an outdoor team. The game last Saturday was probably a bigger blow out than it would have been on grass. It might have even been a completely different game on grass.

RE: For us to have a GREAT defense..we need to move on from DOME
I don't like this thread........its just an excuse.
We got our asses beat by a better team - we would have lost the GB game on grass just like we would have in the dome. While Falcons "conventional" offense may be better suited to a grass stadium - you don't build stadiums to suit your personnel - it costs too much and you don't build stadiums but once every 20 years or more - so, this thread seems somewhat silly to me. I would like an outdoor stadium as much as the next guy but I can live with it either way. At issue moreover is Mike Mularkey - easier to change your OC and get a couple of burners in draft/Free agency on offense/defense than to build a whole new stadium. Sign fast DE in free agency Sign cover corner in free agency Draft a fast WR Draft a fast RB .....problem solved. |

I've stated a LOT of times that I don't know a lot about football schemes, formations, etc....but i do know there always seems to be a lot more 'chatter' about our abilities or lack thereof against a 3/4 defense. As for those teams you like so well, they are among the best defenses no doubt, but. would they be any better/worse if they played in a dome? i guess you could say we beat the ravens in a dome, and they beat the dome field defending champs outside.... so that could be argued as well. anyway, this season is done, we can kick around all our thoughts, displeasures, wants, hopes and dreams for the next six months or so. Here's to hoping there is football this fall, and that Our Falcons continue improving and we go deep in the playoffs next year Chew on THAT, Petunia!
