Falcons have put in requests to speak to Dirk Koetter and Tom Clements

RE: Falcons have put in requests to speak to Dirk Koetter and Tom Clements
I don't want an OC that uses one type of philosophy. Shit we need to be able to layer. As he said you get Defenses who will play zone and man, I want on offense a guy who will stretch the field in longitude and latitude whilst allowing our guys to keep in stride wherever they are. The only receivers on our team who should be stopping and starting are Roddy and Tony those guys can find space they know how to read these NFL offenses. Julio is at his best when he is high pointing the ball or when he is allowed to catch and run in stride. I'm not saying this is all of this guys offense but the fact that I saw only 2 routes attacking the middle of the field pisses me off. I really can't get on board with the idea of interviewing this guy if I am honest

RE: Falcons have put in requests to speak to Dirk Koetter and Tom Clements
Final thing they can bring the guy in for interview, but after the way Blank spoke about the Oline and protecting Ryan, I think it is clear that Arthur wants this team built around his Franchise QB now. A big part of that before getting to the Oline, is the system, Matt was in a pro stule west coast system in college, I think any guy who expects to have a good shot at this job will either be a west coast style coach or someone who utilises west coast heavily into a multi offense. If our organisation is serious about this, they'll be sure to be consulting heavily with Matt, he is a professional, but getting the entire offense to buy into whatever new they bring in, starts with Matt, if he is enthusiastic those other players are going to be equally keen to get going on it and Matt will be chasing them to do so.

Nothing about Koetter says that he can use a cerebral QB like Matt any better or more progressive than what had already been started.

RE: Falcons have put in requests to speak to Dirk Koetter and Tom Clements
It is difficult for me to get behind a hire like Koetter. I am sure that he has a fine football mind. I am also certain that his offense could be more successful in Atlanta than in Jacksonville. But, I fail to see how Koetter is a significant upgrade over Mularkey. Additionally, Koetter is purported to be a vertical attack guy. That type of offense will not take advantage of Matt Ryan's best skill set. I just don't see it as a good fit.

Clement, on the other hand, seems like the ideal choice for us. He is a smart developer of QB's. Look at the last three QB's that he has been charged to improve. When he started with the Packers, Farve was still with the team. Farve was continuing to have problems with interceptions, even as a veteran. Clements got Farve to dramatically improve his interception rate. Once Farve left, Clements was the guy that developed Rodgers into the best QB in the league. And, he did this despite having a weak offensive line. Finally, Clements is the guy that has been preparing Matt Flynn. MF looked really good recently, filling in for Rodgers. So, it is clear that Clements knows how to handle a wide array of QB's and to get the most production from each one.

The problem with Clement is that he is locked up by Green Bay. In addition to waiting for the Packers to lose, we will run the risk of losing Clement to the Packers themselves. Keep in mind that Philbin (the Packers Oc who tragically lost his son days ago), is a candidate for some HC jobs around the league. It is difficult to predict what Philbin will want to do. He may prefer to leave Wisconsin to remove himself from the constant reminders of his son's death. If the Packers lose Philbin, they will naturally want to promote Clements to the Oc position. By the time all of this plays out, the Falcons may be left with few choices.

DIRK KOETTER Offensive Philosophy

It sounds good.. It just seem like he had no weapons with the Jags

Great read. Sounds very Martzian. However, I am seriously concerned about bringing a 4-vertical spread to the ATL with no o-line. We just don't (yet) have the players to run this offense. Maybe if the plan is "get Koettner AND 2 pieces on the o-line in the offseason" it might work, but I'd rather see a more WCO-based guy, personally. Stretch the field horizontally and hit the vertical shots on higher percentage go routes against poor leverage.

I know the concepts are similar. I'm just a bit worried about his comments regarding 5 and 6 man protections. I don't see that working here with the o-line personnel we have. Not at all.

My thoughts exactly. I see great opportunity here. If we can upgrade the RG position this off season, we already have the personnel to transition into the WCO. Both JJ and White would rack up enormous YAC. Snelling is the ideal WCO RB. Gonzalez would have a resurgent season. And, finally, Ryan would be running the offense best suited to his strengths.

That's what I thought too but it looks like we were wrong about this. If we had interviewed a bunch of guys and deemed this one to be the best that would be a different story, but the fact that this is the guy we were apparently so blown away with that we didn't even need to speak to anyone else speaks volumes.

Either he is an under the radar gem and we are going to be sitting pretty. Or our FO is Bananas and Arthur Blank is going to be a laughingstock.

There is understandably a lot of emotion and opinion going around right now but this right here is a close to fact as you can get. I really hope this turns out to be the former and not the latter. I do think, however it turns out, this will turn out to be the defining moment for the Smith regime.
