Falcons: a lot of maneuvering

The Falcons have made some interesting moves this off season. Recently, they restructured Dunta's contract.


According to ESPN's Pat Yasinskas, the Atlanta Falcons and cornerback Dunta Robinson have come to an agreement that restructures his contract to free up some extra cap space for the team. Overall, the team will save $1.75 million in 2012 thanks to Robinson's new contract. The cornerback also agreed to waive a $3 million option bonus and he agreed to lower his base salary by $1 million this season.

This isn't totally a one-sided deal, though. Robinson gets a few benefits in return for the new deal.

But Robinson gets some benefits in return. His new $5 million base salary for this year has been fully guaranteed. The Falcons also increased Robinson's 2013 base salary to $8 million from $7 million and his 2014 salary was raised from $9 million to $10 million. His base salary for 2015 was increased from $9.5 to $11.[/i[i]]5 million.

The Falcons have made an additional 1.75M in cap space. They have already signed a number of players and still have about $21M in space. They must have some dramatic plans to be scratching for extra space. Clearly, teams do not make such moves unless they have a specific target in mind. Perhaps all the Mario rumors are true.
