THIS is surely one truth; bu there are some other factors that contribute also.

Anything should be better than the 3-3-5 soft zone failure.

The Soft 3-3-5 is one of the most horrendous inventions utilized in football.

The performance to date this season has really surprised me. Last year the Falcons were maddeningly consistent and efficient. They seldom made crucial mistakes, they stayed healthy and took advantage of opportunities. Before this season I pointed out how fortunate they had been to dodge the injury bullet the previous year and how I was concerned about the lack of depth. I think that is coming to fruition.

But, that doesn't explain the rash of mistakes in the form of penalties and turnovers that are occurring this year. Yes, in a way inexperience could be a contributor, but from what I am seeing the culprits are veterans, as well.

Not meaning any of this as a diss, just an honest assessment.

You forgot about the part where Roddy forgot he is an elite receiver and started dropping footballs on 3rd down.

Michel Jenkins is widely ridiculed by this fan base, but he did seem to make a few 3rd down receptions for a first down a game.

RE: What the hell is going on around here?!
Here's a possible explanation -- and I HOPE this is true.

Maybe the Falcons learned last year that the regular season just doesn't mean as much as it is cracked up to mean. After all, we played incredibly disciplined football for 16 games, and won 13 of them, but we were still one and done in the playoffs.

Maybe the (subconscious, unverbalized) conclusion they drew from that was to save the *real* intensity and discipline for when it really matters. After all, things like discipline, will-power, etc., are finite resources that become depleted with use.

I don't think the players or coaches would admit this to themselves, but maybe they are more aware of the marathon-like nature of the season, and they are holding some strength in reserve for when it is really needed (late in the season and the playoffs).

Or maybe not. Really, this is something I hope turns out to be true -- only time will tell. If it is not true, it means we have taken a step back since last year, and I really don't want that to be the case.

RE: What the hell is going on around here?!
Trent dilfer is incredibly annoying, but he sometimes makes good points. He said on Herd's show recently that Olines and secondaries would be most affected by the lockout. Said they needed the most practice to work together effectively.

Falcons have had 2 new Olinemen and 2 new members of the secondary, it shows.

More importantly, the falcons wanted to incorporate more downfield passing into their offense and needed the off season to make that transition. Part of the problem is Ryan thinking about what he's doing in the pocket and not having enough practice time for his deep throws.

If the falcons have made the right choices for linemen, on both sides of the ball, they'll be fine. If Reynolds and Hawley were the right players and just need some seasoning, the Oline will be fine. Falcons can run a 3WR set and have the FB/ TE help Baker.

If Edwards and Jerry were the right choices, then the Dline will get better as they learn to play together and Babs come back.

This team should be much better in the second half of the year-Don't know that they get better quick enough to beat the pack, but I'm optimistic about this year.

RE: What the hell is going on around here?!
When you get no pressure on the quarterback no secondary or defense can guard NFL quality wide receivers and quarterbacks from picking it apart with enough time in the pocket. Our defense has been pathetic in terms of pass pressure this season and frankly with the exception of Abraham for several seasons now. We haven't had a defense that would actually go after the QB since Wade Phillips and his 3-4 were here.

Wade Phillips... the guy who coached us to the 19th overall(8th scoring) and 32nd overall(30th scoring) the two years he was here.

Don't get me wrong, he got some sacks, but his defense wasn't all that impressive.
