Falcons: WAR ROOM

I recently purchased the war room book.. Its a very interesting book... A couple of highlights of the books (falcons related)

1. How truly pissed off TD gets when we lose... He even gets pissed when we win games (that had inconsistent play) ... Consistency is the one thing he truly wants.

2. How close TD and Coach Smith is (working together) .. They are truly eye to eye on the moves we make.

3. We really did want either A.J Green or Julio Jones

Quote:When asked to compare Jones and Green, Lionel Vital quickly gets to the point.

“Green is Randy Moss,” he says. “Jones is Terrell Owens.”

When Les Snead is asked, his answer differs slightly.

“When you turn on the film, Green reminds you of a better-route-running, just-as-fast Randy Moss,” he says. “He plays fast and has that great body control. With Julio, I think you’re looking at a better Michael Irvin. He’s just a strong human being. Both of those guys are going early. They’re both starting receivers in this league.”

4. We had a chance to sign Deion but the Smiths (previous owners) didnt want to match the offer.

5. When scouting.. TD really like to look at a player movement.

6. How Competitive Julio Jones is... Julio had a predraft meeting with Todd Hailey and Hailey told Julio that he had a ping pong table (at his house) and was good at it... Julio wanted to skip Lunch, go to Todd Hailey's house and see who was the better ping pong player... Todd Hailey said he fell for Julio right then and there.

Also... At one point Mularkey asks him about a negative play he saw on film. Jones acknowledges the play and then promises the offensive coordinator, “Listen, I will kill that guy.”

7. Julio Jones had the same draft grade (an 8) as Matt Ryan had in 2008 (The Falcons grading) .

8. One of our head scouts said

Quote:“Character is not a problem if you have a strong organization,” he says. “If you have a soft organization, it’s a problem. What happened at your aunt and uncle’s house when those bad kids came over? They straightened them out, didn’t they? Because they didn’t take any junk. But in a soft house, those bad kids will run the house.”

I fully agree.. Thats the one problem i have with TD scouting .. He labels guys undraftable because some made young dumb mistakes in college.

9. We wanted to draft Justin Houston

10. The funniest this in the book... When we drafted Dent in the 3rd round... They turned up the tv (espn)

Yea.. Its a great read.... I like the way it truely breaks down the draft process and Pioli's TD's and The Hoodies draft preparations and just out look of what they are looking for.

I have to be honest... I didnt know TD was so real with it...lol.. You hear the smart carefully worded guy on the radio or TV... But around his guys... Dude keeps it real...


You will definitely like this book... i wasnt able to post everything so its way more things you will find out when you read it.

I really enjoyed the book. I do wonder if we will be able to bring guys in with an edge in due course. I think we will. This is only year 4. Do you remember the patriots part of the story. The first thing hoodie did was get rid of all the negatives then when he was happy with the dynamic, and settled he started to bring in guys like that again who he believed could be raised to be men as well as football players. It is incredible how family like the 3 men are with their organisations.

For what it's worth pointing out. The way the Falcons grading system works , 8 is the highest grade possible.

What did you think about the essence of the draft system being you draft guys who you could see being a starter or better than a current starter in their career? It does seem like somewhere that projected talent is getting lost in translation or taking longer to develop.

People forget we are in year four. Most teams that go into a deep rebuild that includes a shift in organisational paradigm, would not be in contention for the Superbowl in 3 out of those 4 years. The last team I can think of who went through a similar overhaul and managed to get and stay competitive were the patriots we know what happened there but it was under less severe circumstances.

It's easy to get annoyed and on the backs of our young players but in a young team especially the defense where most of you are 4 years in or under you often haven't hit your best strides yet.

Now there are certain players who don't fall under that category for one reason or another, injury, inability to develop past college level, immaturity, reasons can be numerous. This hurts the team more because this isn't a back up you're talking about or a guy tailing off in his career this is a player who in their prime years isn't what the team hoped would be and thus with the team being in contention presents a bigger problem because replacing them means going after a proven vet, or drafting a player with superior talent who can play right away so as not to make situations worse.

It's not easy finding those types a guys. I wrote this because whilst I have my gripes about players in the team, I do understand how it isn't easy for the Falcons FO to make personnel decisions in a rash manner because they have been both rebuilding and competing at the same time.

Imagine how good we are gonna be when both the O and D and Specials are settled units.

Maybe when it comes to certain personnel. But not when it comes to the play calling and the way people are playing on the field. I think you have to look at it as blame being attributed to all parties but not one.

Personnel wise, it is shown Smith is deeply involved in the scouting process, if I recall right it was his enthusiasm that drove the move to get Jaquizz. I like to believe that it was his love of MJD from his time in Jacksonville that inspired him to go after a play who is similar in stature and skill set and mental attitude.

Knowing what I know having read the book, I don't think it was impossible for Smith to have looked into getting MJD to Atlanta. However I believe 08 was the year Jacksonville made MJD their full time starter.

Yes and No..... Yes because they hired them.... No because its still the OC and DC responsibility to do their jobs... We can always change OC and DC

Thats the only problem i have with this regime... It seem like we black dot guys for having an off the field incident... Some times a young guy just makes a dumb mistake... Also like one of out head scouts said... If you have a strong house... He can keep that edgy guy under control.

I will say this tho... TD said we wanted Justin Houston and dude test positive (weed) at the combine... So maybe he is loosening up on that falcon filter.. He may have to do that this year also with our limited picks... He needs a bang for his bucks with these picks.

One funny thing.. TD said he used put a character concern by a player who had tattoos (before he was a Falcon GM) ...lol.. Wow.. really TD... The funny thing about that is the firm that helped Mr.Blank pick our new GM... Said TD looks like the type of guy we may need to drug test...lol
