Many D's in the NFL, even elite defenses, have worked on that principle.

2000 Ravens wasn't an "attacking" defense, neither was the 03 Bucs. The 06 Bears weren't an "aggresive" D, and neither were the Superbowl winning Patriot defenses. The 07 Patriots defenses was all about playing off and not giving up the big play.

I can go on and on, but the only major top tier defenses of late that have been true attacking defenses were the Rex Ryan led Ravens defenses, the Steelers defense, and then Rex Ryan led Jets defense. The Saints as of late are an attacking defense, but even in 09 they got by with fairly lucky turnovers more than just shutting their opponents down. I'm not one to throw around "luck" often, especially when it comes to the NFL, but they simply had a ridiculous number of freak turnovers that year for me to not say luck helped. They aren't really what I'd call a "top tier" defense.

RE: Thoughts on the BVG scheme
the headline from the top of the page kind of sums it up for me:

FALCONS LAST IN LEAGUE IN THIRD DOWN DEFENSE

if you missed it before it was pushed off the page, my all caps is the link

Chew on THAT, Petunia!

RE: Thoughts on the BVG scheme
i've said that every year our D gets better, which is part of the reason i can live with BVG. not the best play caller IMO, and i think he could do a better job teaching the defense and coaching up some of our players, but as long as you don't give up explosive plays for TDs in this scheme your fine. we're one of the best teams in the league in the redzone and we do a good job creating turnovers.

now that we have a legit front 4 i think we'll see the D really take off. in the games where babs, edwards and abe all played we've generated 4 sacks or more. in the games babs missed we had 0.

we have the players for the scheme now and we just need to cut down on the mental errors.

RE: Thoughts on the BVG scheme
We'd be awesome if their was only 3 downs in football, assuming most teams would punt on 3rd down.

but then we'd probably hold the record as the leagues worst second down defense
