Falcons This would make no sense

This would make no sense
William Moore - DB - Falcons
ESPN's Adam Schefter calls impending free agent SS William Moore a "prime candidate" for the Falcons' franchise tag.
A three-year starter and cornerstone of the Falcons' secondary, Moore is hoping to test his value on the open market. He might not get there. The tentative franchise tag number for safeties in 2013 is a relatively inexpensive $6.798 million. The Falcons could very well slap Moore with the tag and the evaluate the situation in 2014 -- when he'll be entering his age-29 season.

Why would they franchise him and cost 6 mil against the cap . Why not give Moore a Decoud type contract

I'm delusional from our playoff loss against GB . Don't take me seriously until year 2413 .

It seems like a tag would be appropriate if a deal were not to get done before FA starts. It's saying here that Moore wants to test the open market. We could eliminate that, albeit for only a year, with tagging him. That'd probably give us a little leverage in negotiating a deal because he wouldn't be able to come back and say "Team X was offering me ______ amount, so I'm going to need ______ amount to come play here in Atlanta." So yeah, 6 mil on the cap would theoretically be a lot of money, but I think the idea is that we would never actually have that hit.

it really doesn't make much sense, especially considering that he has missed over 1/3 of his games during his career. If we had other options I'd say let him test FA but we don't so he probably will get a DeCoud type contract.

Yeah but once we tag Moore he has control of the talks . Im sure Falcons would not be happying paying him 7 mil franchise tag so he not going to sign a ext contract if he is not happy . He could play that 1 season under tag have a great season stay healthy and get a big time contract . He is injury prone tho . So I would want Moore back at a Decoud contract I'm cool with but to franchise him . Id rather let him test open market and if he gets a big deal so be it we get a comp pick

RE: This would make no sense
I think we will get a 4 year contact.
After that time it will be best to see if he wants to come back for one more year.
I don't see him lasting more than 5 years in the NFL.

I would say also draft a safety high next year as insurance. If he works out than Moore can become a casualty. If not we have Moore for a few more years. We have more pressing needs for the draft so I say resign hope for one more year.

I think a DeCoud type deal is pretty reasonable. Especially given Moore's history of injuries. You can probably expect something around that. I would disagree with the idea of Moore having control if we tag him. He has no knowledge of what he would get on an open market. So, in a way, we would be bidding against ourselves. As stated, given Moore's history of injuries, I think we would come out with the better end of the deal.

RE: This would make no sense
aren't there some other safeties going to hit the market this year? maybe we'll talk to a few of them and widen our leverage?

Chew on THAT, Petunia!

RE: This would make no sense
I'd be very, very wary of giving him a big contract, even one the size of DeCoud's. He played like straight garbage in both playoff games.. and I'm being generous. He didn't seem to want to tackle at all.

RE: This would make no sense
I love the way Moore plays but tagging him would be stupid with the amount of games he has missed with injuries in his career.
