RE: This off season seems like only plan was upgrade rb
Or we could look like this:

QB-Matt Ryan
RB -SJax, Quizz, Snelling, Smith, (4th or 5th round rookie)
WR-Julio Jones, Roddy White, Harry Douglas, Davis
TE- Tony, Coffman, (4th or 5th round rookie)
LT-Baker, Holmes
LG-Blalock, Manley
C-Konz, Hawley
RG-Reynolds, Johnson, (4th or 5th round rookie)
RT-Clabo, Holmes

DEFENSE 2013

DE-Massaquoi, Okafor (1st round pick, maybe Okafor starts)
DT-Peters, Robertson
DT-Babs, Kawann Short(2nd round pick)
DE-Freeney or Osi, Matthews
OLB- Nicholas, (4th round pick rookie)
MLB-Dent, Dansby (I still think Dansby is a possibility)
OLB-Spoon
CB: McClain, Owens
NB: Owens, Franks, (3rd round pick rookie)
CB: Asante, Thompson

As I said, we currently have $7.3M under the cap. If we have up to $11-13M in cap space after new Ryan contract, rookies take $3.5M, Freeney or Osi takes $4M, Dansby takes $3M. We even have $500k-$2.5M left over.

Remember, they can spread guaranteed money out so the cap hit is lower than what it appears. So they may pay Freeney or Osi $7M this year, but only $4M cap hit. And Dansby $5M but only $3M cap hit.

All this is still possible. And I'd much rather see this than your scenario.

We have some young players on defense already that Falcons are counting on going forward. Mass & Matthews. What we need is IMPACT defensive players now

Ryan would have been fine with Julio and Roddy and a young TE and young rb..

instead we got 8 million tied up in cap in players that are not going to be here in 2 years..Instead we could have brought in some defensive impact players and still been able to groom Mass and Matthews as eventual replacements. Now they are going to be thrown into the fire and if they fail not only will we need defensive players were going to need a running back and future tight end

It was bad planning this off season on TD . I know you might not see that but this team was better off suited going younger on offense while bringing in defensive impact players now while grooming some of young players

Swift,

It is way too early in the off season to declare that TD has planned badly. This draft is especially deep in defenders. I have never seen so many legitimate NT's, Pass rushers and CB's in one draft.
This draft is especially weak/shallow in RB's. Even Eddie Lacy is given luke warm reviews. It would be better to wait for next year's draft to take a RB. We don't NEED a featured RB this year.....we have Steven Jackson. Might I remind you that SJax is a better RB (even at his age) than anyone else in this draft.
From my POV, TD continues to make the right moves for this team. By the time camp rolls around, the team will have all of its holes filled with either quality rookies or dirt cheap solid free agents. I am not worried in the least bit.

As I said earlier. Matt Ryan contract is going to take months. They have not even sat down and started discussions yet. Again any cap relief will happen only in a Ryan ext and that is not coming anytime soon. Did you see the TD quotes " WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT" they are not worried about it

"It’s a priority for us when the time is right," Dimitroff said. "We’re not too anxious about it because we’re confident that it’s going to get done." The Falcons are expected to get the rest of the team straightened out, then begin talks with Ryan later this spring. He has one year left on his deal at $10 million.

Osi, Abe, Elvis will be long gone. Expect them all gone within next week or so

The draft has depth in defense. I dont see any studs late but see players that can contribute. The issue is can these players make the impact this season. I am not high on Lacy either but we were better suited to go a young RB like Taylor,Bernard etc that we will have just past the next 2 seasons and not cost us 3 million against the cap like Steven Jackson is

Whoever we draft at 30 should project as a starter but are they going to have a huge impact or be the reason why the Falcons make it to a Super Bowl? not very likely. What Falcons could have did with this draft was spent in on offensive youth players that will be able to grow with Ryan, Julio and have young TE and young rb in place to grow while Ryan being the veteran leads them.

Now were going to have a ton of youth and unproven players in defense and no one to lead them. No depth either. By cutting Abe and Dunta we hurt our depth so if we suffer a injury we could be in trouble

If Falcons were interested in Osi or Abe or Freeney they would be FALCONS . and we would make room later. TD would not be waiting around. The market has flatten . Now would be the time to be brought back before another team comes in. The thing is TD is not interested in any of them and is going young

Funny because Arthur Blank mentioned on some radio clips this morning that they have already spoken to Matt's agent and that "it'll get done when it needs to get done" were his exact words.

He certainly made it sound like they can and will do it when it's needed. And if it's needed next week, I'm betting it could get done then.

Both Dave Archer and Brian Finneran have also said they expect it to get done soon to help free up some more cap room.

Where are these TD quotes? I'd like to see them or listen to them to get better context. You could be slanting the context like you do on most things.

As for Osi, Abe, and Dumervil...

I don't want Abe back. Especially not after he badmouthed the team after being cut. He was two-faced about it. Thanked the Falcons on one hand and then like a jaded broken heart girl said he didn't think we would be good enough this next season to make the SB. So fuck him. He has no idea what moves will be made to improve us, just like you don't. Not to mention, his whopping 2 sacks in the last half of the season tells us he's done. He might play well for a few games while he has some energy, but then he will crap out and be under-whelming and cost more than his production warranted.

And Dumervil is going back to Denver, period. That wasn't going to happen no matter what.

Osi and Freeney are still options.

I personally don't care if we go young on defense and don't even get a veteran pass rusher.

I am of the mentality right now that if our defense can do at least what it did last year, then we are in great shape. I absolutely believe with SJax that our offense will convert more 1st downs, score more points, keep opposing offenses off the field, and force opponents to go into throw mode to play catch up. And I believe this is enough if our defense plays like last year.

As has been pointed out, Abe made very little difference the last half of the season. Actually I think he caused more harm than good the last half as his run stopping has gotten terrible and he forces us to do a ton of DL rotation/swapping in and out, which actually makes the defense more predictable. The opposing offense see's Abe come in, they are now more likely to run at him or around his edge or screen off his side than pass deep. Then when he comes out, they are more likely to pass deep. It's kind of a juxtaposition of Turner.

Getting a younger more athletic bunch in there with stamina for days that you don't have to constantly rotate and don't telegraph your intentions as much sounds like a better scenario to me. Especially considering the chance of them performing worse than Abe did the last half of the season is unlikely.

RE: This off season seems like only plan was upgrade rb
So who has TD really nailed in the draft

Ryan- 100% top 10 QB and took next step in his development

Many thought that Ryan was too mistake-prone and should not have been drafted so high.
Sam Baker- below average LT that had 1 good season

Below average? Really? He was very good, as a rookie, and has finally shaken the injuries. Baker is a good quality LT....not a pro-bowler, but good.

Spoon- is soo overrated by our fan base. He is also been injured as well. Its funny how Lofton got killed for his lack of game changing plays but how many did Spoon have?

Lofton was never "killed" by the fans. There was disappointment in his lack of pass coverage, but he was never "killed." The team wanted to keep him, but his price was too high. Right now, I am sure that NO fans would agree with that assessment.
Weatherspoon is clearly a faster LB with the physical talent to become even better. If we move to the 3-4, he will be a defensive force.

Lofton - one of TD better draft picks is gone cause we had to penny pinch

See above

William Moore- injury prone player with talent

Yes, very talented. He is a pro-bowler.

Decoud- serviceable starter that still takes poor angles and his bad mistakes outweighs anything positive he does

Another pro-bowler.

Vance Walker- gone

Clearly a very good draft pick. Taken in the seventh round and showed that he was worth more. He does not fit the 3-4 very well, so he was allowed to find a nice contract. I wish him well.

Konz- was pretty bad last year but still some hope

Konz was not bad. On the contrary, he improved all season and is primed to take over at the Center position. With a season under his belt, he is ready to make all the line calls.

Quizz Rodgers- a 3rd down back.

Yeah, so? Quizz is a change-of-pace RB....and a pretty good one.

Elvis Dumervil - DL - Free Agent
The Denver Post reports free agent Elvis Dumervil was "underwhelmed" by the Broncos' most recent offer, and is planning to begin visiting other teams within the next 48 hours.
Denver reportedly made a three-year offer, but is now "prepared to move on." The Broncos will host free agents Dwight Freeney and John Abraham in the next 24 offers. With neither side appearing keen on a new deal, Dumervil is likely done in Denver. According to the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens still have "serious interest" in Dumervil, but have a "fairly tight" cap situation.

Looks like Elvis to Denver is no lock
