RE: This is not the 2010 Falcons
The Falcons have 7 of their 11 wins by 7 points or less. The most by a team through 11 games since the Super Bowl champion Colts of 2006.

It almost seems like we spend a large part of the game testing out new things, trying to see what works, and then throw together a game winning drive at the end.

It may seem like it but I highly doubt this is the case. Think about it for a minute. This would mean that Smitty and staff would have to be sitting around saying "We are so damn good that we can just try some stuff because we know we can score at will later in the game."

For one thing this contradicts several core concepts. One is the "one game at a time" mentality you constantly hear from players and coaches. Another is the "start fast" deal. If you want to start fast then you want to score early, not just save it for later "when you really need it". Furthermore, if you can score at will why not build up a 30 point lead then start experimenting. That sounds far more Smitty like.

That's not to say we are showing everything we have, but I'm fairly certain what you see on game day schematically speaking is what they feel gives them the best chance of winning that week.

RE: This is not the 2010 Falcons
Play calling has been vanilla for 10 weeks now. We saw the spark of what we can do against KC and DEN. We haven't seen that same team on the field all year since.

We are holding back, it's obvious. Yes, we want to win, but the most important thing is that we get into the playoffs and confuse the hell out of our opponents. We see bits and pieces of things here and there in games, but really its all just vanilla.

Why'd we run against TB? To prove we could. We didn't get much yards, but it proved that we could move the ball. We have done nothing fancy with our running game.

This is why I'm not worried about making it to the playoffs. We are basically a shoe in at this point in time. We can lose all remaining games and we'd still get in there. It's our year, things are falling right. To show our hand in the playoffs with these last few games would be stupid. And once we got that huge lead in the South over our opponents, we haven't had to gameplan the way we want to come playoff time. We are now just sailing to the playoffs on vanilla formations. Get used to it the next 5 games.

That's a very dangerous game to be playing if you mean come playoff time we will see something drastically different because there is a good chance it will fail simply because by that time it might as well be new.

I'm sure we will have new variations but I don't think we will see anything resembling an entirely different scheme.

RE: This is not the 2010 Falcons
No we won't see a new scheme the scheme has been in there for weeks but every now and again we get a flash of a far more aggressive play call on offense. Or a more aggressive blitz scheme from Nolan and a lot of the time the point is made. Come play off time I think those plays. Those aces in the hole get dialled up more often. With their variations also. Seriously weeks 1 to 3 completely different play calling on o and d. The players themselves said with the lead they got it had allowed the coaches to dial back on the play calling and put the onus on them to go out and execute the fundamentals of the scheme and of playing their respective positions as well as coverage and tackling. No point in the exotic schemes if you aren't able to bring it home or make that tackle. I believe it was DeCoud who said that.

I agree. The team we saw against the Chiefs, Broncos and Chargers we haven't seen since. Why? The only reason is that we're holding back for the playoffs.

We handled the Chiefs but so has everyone else. The Chargers are awful too. 4th and 29 anyone? The Broncos adjusted pretty well in the second half and were in position to win that game. The Falcons are not a team that go out there and dominate. We have the tools but it just isnt in the DNA. We aren't holding anything back that makes no sense. Why hold it back? Everyone is gunning for us now. Same with the Texans. They weren't holding back against the Lions and Jags both those teams came to play and put them in their place. Its week 12 everyone has more tape now. There are no surprises just execution. If we execute better in the red zone those field goals, missed or otherwise, become touchdowns. Instead of 24-23 the score is 42-23 and this conversation doesn't exist.

This is far more plausible than us having some magic wand secretly stored in the closet that we will unveil in January and suddenly start blowing people's mind with our dominance.

So your explanation for the lack of blitzing, screens, and players moving around on defense is?...
