The Truth About Brent Grimes...
We kept him around, we developed him. If not for the Atlanta Falcons, the guy would not be in the NFL today. He owes the team more than the team owes him. If he doesn't give us a discount, Fuck him.

he played at a discount these past 2 years...if anything, he deserves something big for compensation on what he missed out on.

That's a T.O. attitude at it's finest, and worse it sounds exactly like something his crazy wife would say. He didn't play for a discount, he played for the amount in his contract that he agreed to and signed. Now he's a free agent and can sign for what the market will bear, nobody owes anyone anything.

He has somethings working for him but he also has some things working against him, the unknown extent of his knee injury for one and maybe more importantly as it relates to the Falcons is the perception that (rightly or wrongly) he quit on the team and chose potential future $$$ over trying to help his team to the Superbowl.

Obviously, those aren't things that will necessarily mean a team wouldn't consider him, but you can bet that will be a factor in any contract negotiations.

Until teams start showing "loyalty" to players, players should show no loyalty to their organization.

The Truth About Brent Grimes...
I wonder if there should be a way for players to "cut" themselves. Teams can choose to not fully honor a contract and cut a player, but the guaranteed money is still owed. What if players can "cut" themselves and they get to keep all their salary earned but would have to pay back the guaranteed money (which is basically signing/roster bonuses). It would give a truly disgruntled player a way out without all the media drama, but it would also help teams in negotiating deals by keeping salaries higher and bonuses lower. If you want most of your money guaranteed you are stuck once you sign the deal. If you are more worried about flexibility you take a higher salary, but if you underperform
the team can cut you with little worry about a cap hit.
