Atlanta did most of its damage through the air, with Ryan expertly picking his way down the field by spreading the ball around. Roddy White, rookie Julio Jones, Harry Douglas and tight end Tony Gonzalez all finished with at least three receptions.

I just can't agree with this. 22 of 42, 52% completion rate, 5.2 YPA, 220 total passing yards, 65.6 passer rating - this doesn't say expert. I don't blame Ryan though. He threw some darts and his long ball to Jones in the end zone was perfect, but for every good ball I saw an equally bad one. However, I can only think of three unforced errors on his part, so I have to look at the line play. The collapsing pockets, continuous pressure, forced checkdowns, etc., were all reminiscent of problems past. Until this line gives him that extra .3 or .4 second of pocket time, we'll continue to see average-to-poor performances against strong rush defenses.

What Ryan did that game was exactly what Tom Brady did vs them to pick them apart (spread them out and attck them) ... The difference is the yac yards the receivers got that game.. The Steelers normally dont let teams beat them deep (Ryan clark stay deep most of the time) .... You have to pick them apart.

To me what mess up Matt's YPA are the short routes the TE's run.. With Tony G aged and are TE's not that athletic/fast... We run short routes with them and 9 times out of 10 they are not collecting Yac yards

On NFLN, Sapp and Faulk just said that Lombardi reported last night that someone from the Falcons told him that we used the first half to work on the 2-minute offense, which is why we weree throwing as much as we did.

Agreeing with another poster, I didn't like the fact that even though we threw for 260+ yards in one half of football ryan was throwing 40 some odd passes and only getting a 52% completion....maybe make that 60% and that'd be reasonable. Now I do give to the fact that there were some dropped passes or he was rushed so he didn't get enough time to throw, but that to me is unacceptable to throw that much and be so low on completions.

Could just have been the design for the game against the steelers, but hopefully when its time to get serious we're not asking ryan to throw for 40 passes in one half. If I remember correctly there was a statistic that showed when he threw for more than "x" amount of passes we won/loss vs if he threw for less than "y".

It was by design that we threw 40 times in one half. We basically ran 2 minute drill the entire half.

Completion percentage is hella overrated. Red zone efficiency, 3rd downs, and leadership are far bigger factors in successful qbing.

Peter King wasn't impressed:
Atlanta QB Matt Ryan vs. Pittsburgh (first half)
Comp. Att. Yards TD-Int Rating
22 42 210 1-1 65.6
Thought: Weird. The Falcons obviously wanted to see how the Roddy White-Julio Jones-Tony Gonzalez-Harry Douglas receiver group worked in tandem against a good pressure defense like Pittsburgh's. The answer: plenty of work left to do.

"The Falcons had 266 yards in the half, nearly matching the 276 yards the Steelers gave up in an entire game in 2010."

We were 7/12 on 3rd down conversions, which was very good. Ryan had 2 TDs taken away from him (Julio and Tony G.), then add that brain fart throw to HD that would be 3 TDs we should have had before Half

Peter King is an idiot. He's called for us to go under .500 each of the past two season and he had Carolina winning the division last year.

I actually feel much better not having Peter King's blessing.
