RE: Short yardage solutions
The OLine simply isn't coming around in the run game. Short yardage just makes it even more difficult for them. The clear choice would be to have the OLine start run blocking like NFL Lineman are supposed to, not let running lanes collapse immediately, and not get pushed off the point of attack nearly every single rushing play. Its pretty obvious they are still struggling to do it.
I am with Peyton here; no back sets with the opportunity for Matt to step up in the pocket and run for a couple yards. We have seen him become much better this year when it comes to sliding up in the pocket. Usually he throws the ball while sliding up towards the line of scrimmage. Using that same principle, I think he could simply run for a couple and move the chains, if need be. Having no back sets (along with the appropriate drag routs and short curls at the sticks) would give Matt an option if a defender was right in his face when stepping towards the line of scrimmage. I am not a coach and even I see many different scenarios where this type of short yardage plan could fail. However, what we are doing now, trying to force OLinemen who aren't run blocking well to open holes in crucial situations (3rd/4th and must haves) has really started to bite us on the ass. |
