Falcons Sean Weatherspoon

RE: Sean Weatherspoon
I think Spoon has looked a lot better because he has been in coverage much less. He's improved coverage, but along with what Beef wrote, one of our DB's will be covering Graham. Graham is not the typical tight end, he is basically a wide receiver. Remember Spoon covering Lance Moore last season? Something we don't need to happen again.

Like I already said, I know Spoon typically covers the slot receiver and HB (ie. what we technically call a pass-catching RB). But just for kicks, I went back and looked at every game play-by-play recap and looked for TE's and Spoon and what the circumstances of the pass plays were.

Chicago: TE's - Davis and Spaeth
J.Cutler pass short right to M.Forte to ATL 24 for 3 yards (S.Weatherspoon).

RE: Sean Weatherspoon
So 32 total pass plays covered by Spoon. Only 4 of them were on a TE and all 4 of those TE's were from the weak side in a 2-TE set.

He won't be covering Jimmy Graham. As you can see, that's ALWAYS done by somebody other than Spoon.

Good info beef. I wonder if NO will try and force him to cover Graham.

RE: Sean Weatherspoon
He's healthy this year. He looks so much faster out there.

We'll be in the nickel for most of this game. Expect Hayden to be on Graham. I say blitz Spoon at Brees all day.

I applaud the breakdown but there are 2 problems with this.

1st problem - The guy making the tackle isn't technically always the guy covering the pass catcher

2nd problem - What about the plays where the TE is actually covered and for that reason the QB doesn't throw it to them?

This doesn't really prove that Weatherspoon doesn't cover TE's on a regular basis.

RE: Sean Weatherspoon
Matter of fact...where is this Spoon play in the Lions breakdown

Spoon hit on Pettigrew

I'm not knocking you and definitely kudos on the breakdown but without me trying to actually look at the games and just going off of memory I have brought up a play that wasn't mentioned in the breakdown.

Does anybody remember an article that mentioned our coverage on TE's this year has been better because of Spoon? I wasn't able to find it.

Edit: I think this was the play in your breakdown:
(Shotgun) M.Stafford pass incomplete short left to B.Pettigrew [C.Lofton].

But from the video you can see it wasn't Lofton...actually Lofton wasn't even in the picture so using the play by play breakdown on NFL.com or wherever isn't totally accurate.

Nope, Sproles on Spoon is the mismatch the Saints will be looking for. They also get Graham isolated on the nickle or safety where he has a huge size advantage.

How in God's name is Spoon a mismatch against Sproles?

Sproles has been eating up LB's all season long. While Spoon may be athletic, there is no way he can cover Sproles.
