RE: Sean Weatherspoon
Actually anytime you see a [name] in brackets rather than (name) in parentheses, I see now that this is the guy who pressured the QB and forced an incompletion.

And if you notice, a lot of those (Weatherspoon)'s weren't tackles, but incompletions. Which clearly means he's the one defending the pass on that play.

That said, 2 things....
(Shotgun) M.Stafford pass incomplete short middle to B.Pettigrew (S.Weatherspoon).

First, I found that play after going back and looking through the play-by-play again. No clue how I missed it other than I was going pretty fast. Odd that it happens to be one with Spoon against a TE though.

Second, the guy lined up on the opposite side in what looks like the slot is actually TE Tony Scheffler #85. So the only reason Spoon ended up on Pettigrew is because the 2-TE set and Pettigrew happened to be on the weak side.

Now the difference is that Scheffler and Heller are both receiving TE's along with Pettigrew on the Lions. David Thomas and John Gilmore, on the otherhand, have a combined 4 total receptions this year for the Saints. Jimmy Graham won't be lining up on the weak side during pass plays I don't think. But hey, you never know. Thomas or Gilmore might line up on the strong side in a 2-TE set and they go play-action fake the run and Graham releases on the weak side. I doubt it though.

RE: Sean Weatherspoon
I've seen Jimmy all over the place. I've seen him on the line, in the slot, and on the outside. so everybody will get a piece of him. If the Saints are smart they will try to line Jimmy up against anybody but Spoon because he is the best matchup player we have for him. He's bigger than any DB and faster than other LB.

We play a zone mostly so it's not as simple as who the person lines up across from. If we were a man defense then that would be different but our LB's play zone over half the time. So even if the TE lines up across Nicholas it is definitely possible for him to run across the formation into another player's zone.

Also we may play matchups as well. There's so many factors that play into who is covering who other than where they line up.

While it is true that David Thomas only has three catches on the year, it must be noted that he has missed most of the season with an early game 3 concussion. He has 30 and 35 catches the past two seasons and is always a threat when on the field having only gone one game without a catch over that stretch.

Outside of maybe Lance Briggs, and that's a maybe, there isn't an OLB in the league that is more athletic than Spoon.

And none of them can cover Sproles. Why do you think he's the leading receiver in the NFL?

Because the saints like to pass and brees loves to dump off to his rb because his wr are covered.

Which in turn turns into the best completion percentage in the NFL and the best 3rd down success in the NFL.

All a part of what it takes.

Leading receiver by what definition?

Receptions? Nope.
Yards? Nope.
Touchdowns? Nope.
YPC? Nope.

Sorry, I meant the leading receiver in catches in the NFC, he is only second in the NFL behind Welker. By the way, Graham is 2nd in the NFC and 3rd in the NFL.

Pretty crappy, huh?

Yet somehow you've still lost 3 games.
