If there was one thing that stood out about him, one thing that I could say that this was a good hire, then I wouldn't have posted this.

In his defense, Gabbert was an absolute dumpster fire and not even a miracle worker could have made him an adequate NFL starter. My main concern is the fact that his offense's production steadily got worse and worse until it bottomed out this season. In theory, I think his scheme would make better use of guys like Quizz, Snelling, and HD. In practice, his playcalling is kind of questionable and doesn't really hold up against the better teams.

But that being said, you are wrong. Selling tickets definitely helps the team.

Straw man; I didn't say it was useless for the team. I was referring specifically to it not winning us games. Don't put words in my mouth.

If you want to get into the deeper reasons why PR is important, such as longterm attractiveness of the franchise for sponsors, coaches, and players which ACTUALLY does improve the team over the years; sure, we can discuss that.

So was I. When the team sells tickets, they get money. Money helps the team win games.

If wisely spent.

Losing teams still spend money. Even the worst teams still have sponsors. Guessing whether or not the area of expenditure is wise or not, is just that, a guess.

Ironic choice of Martz. This guy is very much akin to what Martz does well (utilize multiple offensive weapons) and what Martz does poorly (protect the QB)

How do you know it wasn't/they didn't?

Maybe Friedgen doesn't want to be an NFL coordinator at his age?

There are a lot of things we don't know right now, and many we may never know (did Clements turn us down, did Billick, etc.?). What we do know is we just hired a very knowledgeable OC who knows how to put together a dynamic offense, but whose achilles heel is that you can't protect the QB very well. Our work is cut out for us -- we have to improve the o-line in FA. I expect the draft to be defense heavy, because as the Niners and Giants have shown, defense still wins championships (in large part because they can negate even the very best o-line -- see New Orleans). If we get a really good defensive coordinator, this team could be poised to make a run next season.

Before this hire, I though the o-coordinator was the most important hire. Now, having watched the playoffs and realized as good as our defense is, it has been inconsistent and could be improved, I think the d-coordinator hire is far more important.

Finally, a voice with a little reason. As has been reported we've known about MM leaving for the Jaguars for at least a month. I have faith we explored our options before we made this hire.

I agree the DC is much more important at this stage. With a few pieces and some ass kicking I think we can be a top 5 defense.

The problem at the moment is we don't know if Spags will even coach next year.

The Eagles,Saints and Falcons are all interested in him as well. As for Nolan, he is still under contract in Miami. It's possible once they name a new HC he will be retained by the Dolphins.

If it plays out that way, there aren't a bunch of options for us as far as big names.

We'll see......

How do you know it wasn't/they didn't?

Bottom line the team is the team, they make the decisions, you can either flip out and have a hissy fit or wait and see what happens. I learned to stop worrying about things that are out of my control a long time ago. All the household names weren't household names at some point. I never heard of Peyton before he was with the saints for example.

If your not sold find another team to support or just whine and whine on the message boards.

According to his resume, Friedgen ran the Chargers offense "into the ground," taking it from 11th to 16th to 26th in total offense during the three short years he was in the NFL. Plus, his win/loss record as a college head coach is worse than Koetter's, with one less conference championship and practically the same record in bowl games. Pauly would have blown a head gasket had we hired that guy.
