Falcons Obsessed With The Deep Ball

Obsessed With The Deep Ball
Everyone, myself included, have been talking about how we "need to throw deep" and how "Ryan can't throw deep". If not throwing deep makes you a game manager, then what were Steve Young, or Joe Montana. Even Tom Brady was for his first 5 years in the league, which I should note he hasn't won a ring since being this QB statistical dynamo that he is now. Instead of pining for us to go deep why don't we just ask to play normal falcons football. Last year we ran the short and intermediate stuff to perfection, mixing in shots downfield when they were available. We can still throw it 35 times a game, imo Turner is no longer the Burner. Anyways, last year if we'd have had Julio and Tony Gonzalez playing like he is right now and a healthy Harry Douglas in our offense last year we'd have broke records. What I'm trying to say is that maybe Ryan is best suited for a West Coast hybrid style, or at least not suited for a vertical offense. That doesn't make him less of a QB. He's got more come from behind wins than anyone since '09 and the second most since '08. Your telling me he can't play the position, look, right now EVERYONE is failing. Instead of trying to force things right, let's go to what worked last year. And stop the huge pass patterns, our O-Line isn't suited for it anyways. Julio is just as dangerous catching the ball 7 yards of the line of scrimmage in stride as he is 40 yards downfield in single coverage. You can't stop him regardless. (unless he pulls a hamstring lol) People are saying that apparently he doesn't have "IT", he has it, a lot more of it than most QB's in the league. He had us in position to take the lead last night before the HUGE sack given up by Baker and the INT. That he did force, but he was trying to make a play, which is what everyone was bitching about to begin with. "Why won't he grow balls and throw downfield???". If he would have checked down to a RB on that series we would have been pissed he didn't go for the throat. What I'm trying to say is the Atlanta Falcons have a lot of problems, but our QB is still one of our smallest in my opinion. This team is really starting to get it together, now I don't think we're gonna win the superbowl this year lol but I do feel we're about to turn a corner. We almost beat the Slackers last night, despite our play calls going into the witness protection program, and our execution rivaling a pop warner squad. An analyst said we were one of the luckiest teams in the league last year and we'd take a step back, and it's showing. We almost won last night after we couldn't even beat the Bucs two weeks before. The same Bucs that almost got beat by the Manning less Colts at home and did lose to Alex Smith and the Niners. We are making improvements it's just gonna take time.

RE: Obsessed With The Deep Ball
Simply because if you don't threaten to throw it deep the running game, out routes, curls get taken away by the cheating safeties. And those are all we have, yet MM seems to love to run it up the middle with 9 in the box.

RE: Obsessed With The Deep Ball
We have no deep ball, that's why are yards after catch are terrible. Short curl routes before the first down marker don't gain anything when the defense knows it's coming.

RE: Obsessed With The Deep Ball
It isn't like we're not taking shots. We've attempted at least 2-3 deep passes a game.

RE: Obsessed With The Deep Ball
The deep ball needs one thing "TIME" Matty can throw them but the o-line doesn't give him that. Last night when Stafford threw that pass to Calvin Johnson I ran it back and counted how much time he had 5 seconds. Mattys lucky if he gets 2 seconds. Even if the Falcons did a Flea Flicker do something to give him more time because the O-line can't give it to him. MM is suspposed to be Mr Gadget, use Meier to fake it to him and get Ryan to the side and then throw it. Everything about the deep ball is about one thing. TIME. Start counting how much time he has compared to Brady and Stafford and others. The problem is the O-line its set up more for running then pass blocking which is what we need. Wink

RE: Obsessed With The Deep Ball
At the same time, Ryan also needs to work on his accuracy when the chances do present themselves.
