Here's just a few of the current NFL QB coaches:

Miami: Karl Dorrell - played WR in college only, has been an OC & coached WR's, DB's, & QB's.
NE: Bill O'Brien - played DE & ILB in college & NFL, has been an OC & coached RB's, DL's, LB's, & QB's.
Cinci: Ken Zampese - played WR in college only, has coached DB's, WR's, & QB's.
Pitt: Randy Fichtner - played DB in college only, has coached TE's, WR's, & QB's.
Phili: James Urban - played WR in college only, has coached QB's only
N.O.: Joe Lombardi - played TE in college only, has coached DL, RB's, TE's, & QB's
Jags: Mike Sheppard - didn't even play college, has been head coach in college & coached WR's & QB's.

And the list could go on, but hopefully you get the point & are a little more educated about the topic.

So your argument is that because other teams do it, it is okay? That's good for those teams but my opinion still stands that I want an intelligent coach that has played quarterback at the college or NFL level or has a good track record as a QB coach in developing QBs.
Let's bring back George Stewart to coach the QBs!

george stewart, or anyone else for that matter. we have a new QB coach, Bob Bratkowski. we can all argue/discuss the pro's n con's till the cows come home, but this is the guy they wanted and hired. If i remember correctly, it was even said by TD/Coach Smith, i don't remember which, that Matt would have some input into who they hired as well. I don't however remember anything about taking a poll on the message boards for approval.....

Chew on THAT, Petunia!

I think he's saying that he deserves a chance whether he's played the position or not.

You're clearly just arguing for the sake of it at this point.

My post wasn't an "opinion" suggesting it's "okay". It was nothing but reality contradicting your notion that only coaches who have played the position of QB make good QB coaches.

Bill O'Brien was a D-lineman for goodness sakes & yet he's been coaching QB's for the past 10 years & one of them happens to be Tom Brady, who just got done having one of the greatest seasons for a QB in the history of the sport. So this bit of info is sitting out there & yet you're still condemning a guy who's in a similar situation, not having actually played QB.

Knowing this, there's no reason you should stick to your opinion. It can't be made to look any more unreasonable & foolish.

Unless of course you're just being stubborn & refuse to admit you're wrong, which we all understand is really the case.

Since we all know Bill O'Brien is the true catalyst of the Patriots juggernaut offense and was with New England during the first few crucial Brady years of his development. Wouldn't COMMON SENSE say somebody who has played the position at a high level be better served to coach it? Not just with nuances but with Matt having a level of respect and trust. Bratkowski is just a hiring from the good ol' boy network because he knows Mularkey. He will definitely help in gameplanning and be a good fallback should MM leave. I feel he's just being stashed away, which is fine if that's what the coaches feel is best for the longterm continuity of the offense.

Can a guy be a successful coach without having played or coached the position before? Sure. Would I prefer that??? No.

This is a football message board that is great for expressing opinions during one's spare time. So with a full offseason ahead, why don't you tell me something more relevant to discuss right now on a Falcons forum? Maybe I can post a seven round mock draft <sarcasm>.

I'm trusting Smitty on this one. What reason has Mike Smith given so far to NOT trust him?

RE: Falcons Name Bob Bratkowski QBs Coach
I've seen a couple of negative comments about Bratkowski having never played the QB position, but it isn't a requisite to coach the position. There are plenty of coaches coaching positions that they never played. Bill O Brian, for instance, in New England, played DE and LB in college, but he is the Patriots OC, and QB coach. And he's held those positions in several other places, as well.
