RE: Falcons Name Bob Bratkowski QBs Coach
to me, it's obvious that we're setting him up to be Mularkey's successor. A guy who never played/coached the QB position or even specialized in it whatsoever as a coach in the past couple of decades, it seems pretty clear to me that he's an offensive coordinator who is temporarily being held as a positional coach.

He couldn’t handle adjusting to the complex defenses of today. But he will be a good QB coach. carson9 says: This is real bad news for Matt Ryan. First, he will take away the short quick passes and have Ryan doing 7 step drops on every pass. His offense is so predictable it isn’t funny. Even though he isn’t calling the plays, Matt Ryans sack total will increase atleast by 50%, mainly because he will have no short passes and will be taught to hold onto the ball until the last second. quizguy66 says: As a Bengal fan who was glad to see Brat leave, I have to wish him luck with his new gig in Atlanta (and may he learn from any mistakes he made in Cincy such as being too predictable if he gets another OC gig some time). While a change was needed, Brat as a person always was a class act in Cincy. Comments found here http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...n-atlanta/ ![]() Season Ticket Holder - Section 312 |

But since 35 years ago he played WR in college, the man is retarded and couldn't use his 30+ years of football coaching experience to coach a QB out of a sack. I'd rather have somebody with little to no coaching experience that actually played the position like a Steve Young or a Rich Gannon (or even a much lesser name). I guess you don't understand that Smitty worked his way up by coaching a position that he....knew and actually played in college. Since "defensive coordinator" is not a football position, I don't think he should have to play a specific one ;-). Most NFL coaches never played in the NFL so I'm not quite sure what the point you're trying to make is. Good NFL HCs and coordinators usually require different traits than a position coach. I'm sorry if I think it would be best if somebody that actually played the position in the NFL (or even college) like some guy named Musgrave would have a more thorough idea about quarterbacking than a guy who has coordinated a laughable franchise for the good part of 10 years. The Brat hiring is good forward thinking but I'd rather somebody that can help Matt MORE over the next two crucial years. |

Here's just a few of the current NFL QB coaches: Miami: Karl Dorrell - played WR in college only, has been an OC & coached WR's, DB's, & QB's. NE: Bill O'Brien - played DE & ILB in college & NFL, has been an OC & coached RB's, DL's, LB's, & QB's. Cinci: Ken Zampese - played WR in college only, has coached DB's, WR's, & QB's. Pitt: Randy Fichtner - played DB in college only, has coached TE's, WR's, & QB's. Phili: James Urban - played WR in college only, has coached QB's only N.O.: Joe Lombardi - played TE in college only, has coached DL, RB's, TE's, & QB's Jags: Mike Sheppard - didn't even play college, has been head coach in college & coached WR's & QB's. And the list could go on, but hopefully you get the point & are a little more educated about the topic. |

He'll run drills, workouts, & advise on mechanics. Being that he was a WR, he'll hopefully help with route timing & confidence in throwing deep. And if he teaches Matty to hold the ball longer & wait for routes to open up, that might just be a blessing. If we get the deep threat & speed-back weapons in place, this should help get defenses spread out & give Matty that extra time, so I'm all for it if that's this guy's philosphy. |

Offensive philosiphy will not vary too much. I for one would not mind seeing MM open up the playbook a little bit. Hey maybe we might add in a few more screen passes to keep the defense honest next season. Rise Up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

RE: Falcons Name Bob Bratkowski QBs Coach
i'm in the boat with the 'wait and see how this works' crowd. I'm not gonna condemn the hiring, and i don't 'blindly sniff the jock of coach smith' and say hey this is the greatest thing......
i think it has the potential to be a good move based on a couple of things. the man has 30+ years coaching experience, i'm sure he's seen a LOT of things sometimes the 'great' player can't coach his own position because it came so easily to him, he can't understand why it isn't so easy for someone else i think the man receiving the ball can come in and tell the man throwing the ball some things about what the receivers need him to be doing. to finish off my thoughts, we're gonna have people jumping up and down hating on this. it wouldn't matter if we could bring Lombardi back from the dead as a coach for us, someone would find a way to hate on it.... Chew on THAT, Petunia!

RE: Falcons Name Bob Bratkowski QBs Coach
I think this has the possibility to be a good move. He is a very experienced coach that can provide a different perspective for Ryan. The obvious thought is he could really help with timing and such things.
He seems to be a good coach with alot of experience, so until a later date I don't see how this can be called a bad move. I see some people have concerns but to them I say to at least wait and see, in my opinion a good coach should be able to coach a number of positions well (especially as he was OC for so long, he had a hand in everything that went on on that side).
