Falcons: Misc. Thoughts from Radical

[Radical]

1. Turner is done. Our offensive line is a big problem, but Turner doesn't have it any more.

2. Jacquizz should be our starting back.

3. McClure is right in that it is more than the line, but he picked a bad time to say it consider how he and the line has performed.

4. Dunta is mediocre at best, and we seem to start every game with him getting roasted.

5. Ray Edwards was a bust. You can only blame the scheme so much. Dude clearly wasn't what we paid for.

8. I think that at this point, our run game should work through our passing game. Runs from spread formations, draws, and a lot of runs out of singleback sets should be the play.

9. Short yardage the situation? Pass. Stop running; it doesn't work. No combination of ball carrier, formation, pulls, or gaps hit has worked. Quit pretending it's even an option at this point.

10. Drafting along the lines needs to be our #1 priority for a few years now, pausing to consider TE and CB if anything else.

11. Of the Top 10 rushing RBs, half of them went 3rd round or later.

Arian Foster - Undrafted
Chris Johnson - 24th Overall
Doug Martin - 31st Overall
Stevan Ridley - 3rd round
Alfred Morris - 6th round
Frank Gore - 3rd round
Jamaal Charles - 3rd round
LeSean McCoy - 2nd round

Grab a guy from FA on a team with depth like we did with Turner, or roll the dice on a mid-late round pick.

I agree with you on a lot of what you say. I don't think Cornerback is a huge need at this point with McClain stepping up and playing reasonably well... Grimes is out. DRob is here as we can't get rid of his contract. Owens is ok as a #4. Running back is a priority as Turner has seen his best days. I would like to see us spend our first round pick on either DE or OG based on who is available, and who we pick up in free agency.....

If Manti' Teo drops out of the top ten i would love to jump up a grab him. He will patrol the middle for us for the next decade at least and leave weatherspoon to do what he does best..... Reek havoc!!!!!

2. Quizz is not going to survive playing every down... He's just not built for that. Keep him in his current role with a few more touches and let Snelling have the rest.

Quizz would disagree with you. Guy is built, and has Dunn-like heart. Don't tell him he isn't an every-down back.

Yeah Quizz had 950 touches and something like 6k all purpose yards in college in a pretty good conference which includes USC, Oregon, and Stanford, so it's not like he's playing against small DII sized players. He was playing against guys who made it in the NFL.

Most of his touches were between the tackles runs. And he only fumbled 1 time in his career in college. The guy was/is a 3-down back.

My only problem with Quizz is that he's about a 4.5x speed guy. He is only just slightly faster than Turner and Snelling at this point. But he's not fast enough to beat people around the edge, blow by anyone, and run away without chance of catching him. He's quite the opposite of that. His best quality is that he's shifty as hell and can make people miss in open space and he can cut on a dime to find holes and is short and hard to see behind 6'4 O-linemen. He's a great possitive yardage guy, but he's simply not a homerun threat at all.

That's another reason why I don't like him on returning kicks. He's never going to blow through kick coverage and take one to the house. He's easily caught from behind if he ever does find an open lane.

Antoine Smith, on the other hand, is 4.3x speed and one of the fastest guys in the NFL. I just don't get why that's not being utilized in anything but kick coverage. That just bothers the shit out of me.

I agree slightly. His shiftiness and strength combined makes him a possible homerun threat. It's not Lesean Mccoy-ish but it can be done.

Positive yardage is the key thing tho. If we could get positive yardage on a consistent basis, then we would be near unstoppable. We ran the ball on the first down of almost every offensive series until we were in crunch time and I believe every one of those runs went for 1 yard or less. We gain those and our passing game will pick up the rest.

Teo is a top ten guy. Even if he drops, I doubt TD trades up for him.

It is too early to get a solid feeling for our first pick. So much depends on value and alternative choices in later rounds. I will say that a quality CB is always a welcome first round draft pick. True starter-quality CB's are tough to obtain. For instance, if Xavier Rhodes were to be available at our pick, I would have a tough time passing on him.
