Falcons Matt Ryan: Then And Now

Matt Ryan: Then And Now
I had known Matt Ryan had a great second half last season but I never compared it to his previous numbers so I decided to look at Matt Ryan: Then and Now. Here are Ryan's career stats all the way through the Lions game in 2011. This is including the playoffs.

55 G, 1085-for-1777 (61.1%), 12,129 YDS (6.8), 78 TD, 46 INT - 85.3 QB Rating.

Those are pretty good numbers but nothing special. The Falcons went 37-18 (.673)

Here is Ryan's numbers starting with the Colts game last season.

11 G, 204-for-385 (62.3%), 2,992 YDS (7.8), 23 TD, 4 INT - 102.0 QB Rating.

Those are MVP type numbers. The Falcons have posted a 7-4 (.636) record in those games.

So while there has only been a slight improvement in Ryan's completion percentage his ypa has improved by a whole yard which is a lot of improvement. The fact that he's manage to improve both his completion percentage and yards per attempt while better his TD to INT ratio is something we should all be excited about.

I know there is some how this myth out there that Ryan has peaked or leveled off but I don't see how that can be the case when Sunday against the Chiefs was arguably the best game of Ryan's career.

Matt Ryan: Then And Now
A myth perpetuated by idiots is no myth at all.

Another "myth" is that Ryan regressed last year, had a down year. I'm not sure how setting franchise passing records is a down year, but again, idiots.

The logic went something like this:

Drew Brees 16 Games, 5,476
Tom Brady 16 Games, 5,235
Matthew Stafford 16 Games, 5,038
Eli Manning 16 Games, 4,933
Aaron Rodgers 16 Games, 4,643
Philip Rivers 16 Games, 4,624
Tony Romo 16 Games, 4,184
Matt Ryan 16 Games, 4,177

Wow, look at how few yards Ryan threw for, he must have regressed!

I did a quick per game average breakdown comparison.

First 55: 220.5 YPG, 1.4 TDpg, .8 INTpg
Last 11: 272 YPG, 2.1 TDpg, .4 INTpg

Because other QB's threw for over 5k yards and the bar was artificially raised too high and that's what he was compared instead of the historical norms.

And, we lost 6 games and for a 3rd time got blown out in the playoffs. And instead of splitting the blame across the entire organization (*cough* Mularkey/BVG *cough*), they improperly pin all success and failure of a team on the QB.

And now, we're obviously starting to see the impact an OC and DC can have on an organization. Preseason didn't mean anything... but it did. We scored more TD's, converted more 1st downs, and gained more yardage in the 7.5 quarters that Matt Ryan played this preseason than we had in the entire previous 2 full preseasons. And then we just scored 40 points in an opener against a pretty good team that's supposed to contend for the AFC West and Ryan put up 136 PR.

We're at a completely different level than the past 4 years and it's unmistakably noticeable and obvious that it's as a result of the new scheme.

Give it a few more weeks and we'll see how the tune of all these "Pundits" changes. They won't have a choice but to eat crow while wiping the egg off their faces. And it's going to feel good to watch it happen for a change and feel confident it won't stop.

Not sure if anyone reads Mike Sando's MVP Watch, but Ryan went from unranked to 3rd in 1 game. Of course I think he looks fairly stupid for still having Rodgers #2.

Wow. That really puts it into presective. Thanks.

The Falcons are capable of playing offense every single game like they did against the Chiefs. That's how good we are. I don't think things would have been much different if the Chiefs had Hali and Flowers. And I'm gonna go full blown homer and say there's no way the Falcons lose to the Broncos. In fact I think they win by at least 10 points. The Broncos don't concern me. There are other teams that concern me but the Broncos aren't one of them.

RE: Matt Ryan: Then And Now
I also think it's time to stop with the myth that Matt Ryan can't play well in outdoor stadiums. The Falcons are 4-0 in their last 4 regular season games in outdoor stadiums.

2011 - Week 4 - @ Seattle - W 30-28
2011 - Week 14 - @ Carolina - W 31-23
2012 - Week 1 - @ Kansas City - W 40-24
2012 - Week 3 - @ San Diego - W 27-3

Ryan - 103-for-151 (68.2%), 1185 YDS (7.8), 11 TD, 1 INT - 113.1 QB Rating
