Actually, I was kinda hoping all along that we'd hire Koetter so that the jackanapes threatening to renounce their fanship over such a move would disappear and we would no longer be forced to suffer their nonsense. Sadly, those threats were predictably hollow. |

RE: MIKE NOLAN!!!!
That's why I would never say it, because then I would have to do it and there's no way that's happening!! I remember back in the 1981 playoff game, when Dallas won, my Dad and all his friends were (of course) angry, pretty much all of them yelling "I'm never watching them again #$@#$". I was 14 at the time, I remember thinking "that's kinda stupid, you already paid for season tickets". Of course we went to all the games the next year.

If they did, they were venting, not tone taken seriously. I don't like the hire. Against the backdrop of Blank's presser, it didn't make sense. Even if we go undefeated, win the next 4 Super Bowls, and I've eaten plates and plates of crow, I'm still going to maintain that the hire based solely on his resume never made sense, but I was very glad I was wrong about it. The same thing could be said if we hired Betty White. Funny thing is, the people making fun of the people questioning the Betty White hire, would still smugly act like it was a genius hire and mock them for it. I never realized the Falcons board had it's own version of hipsters. "Yeah man, the Koetter hire was so genius, because like, he had the worst ranked offense in the NFL, so really, it was such a genius move because no one would ever expect the guy that was the worst OC in the league would get such a desirable job. These posers that don't like it, just don't get it man. Hand me another PBR. I hope I put enough gold bond on so I can get out of these girl jeans later..." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3CXS04cy...re=related |

RE: MIKE NOLAN!!!!
Or he could be that guy that had the 7th ranked offense at one point or was interviewed for the Broncos HC job. It's amazing how 1 year of the last ranked offense is the only thing some people are looking at.
The people that like him are looking at other things in his career that indicate the Stats don't necessarily justify him as an OC. I'm going to keep saying this but we had the 6th ranked O-line but NOBODY thinks we have the 6th best O-line. The reason being is we watched, our FO watched on a daily basis our O-line and how inept they were. Same thing for the FO hiring Koetter. They saw that 32nd ranked offense and even played against but what they saw on tape and of previous information on Koetter that he was much better than the 32nd ranked offense. How hard is it to comprehend this? That you being a fan, just like myself do not know everything there is to know about this guys philosophy or skills. All you are doing is reading a piece of paper with numbers and words on them. You're not looking at the intricacies of his offense and how he utilizes talent. How man Jaguars game did you watch in the last 4 years? and how many of those did you decipher the offense and came to a football based conclusion about? |

RE: MIKE NOLAN!!!!
Fact is, none of us can possibly know all of the circumstances and motivations surrounding these moves, or any moves this organization makes. That's why I always employ a process of deference when forming opinions on such matters.
In order of trustworthiness: 1) Falcons front office and coaching staff 2) Credible analysts like Mayock 3) Informed and level-headed message board posters 4) My own knowledge and judgement 5) Random guy walking his dog 6) Random guy's dog 7) Message board posters who brashly claim to know better than all of the above 8) D. Orlando Ledbetter Utilizing the above process is a great way to keep your foot out of your mouth. I highly recommend it. |

RE: MIKE NOLAN!!!!
I just deploy the wait and see approach. The first and last time I ever was upset with a choice of the Front office and expressed it to the highest degree, similar to Paulitik and others, was with the Matt Ryan pick and yes my foot was all the way past my esophagus.
Since then if I disagreed, I would say I disagree and then move on to wait and see. None of the this is a dumb hire, our team is doomed, I'm leaving this team, etc. For example I disagreed with this hire. Both sides make some sort of sense, but the most sense have honestly come from the people who like the hire. The things that sticks out to me is an interview for an HC job at one point. Then it was in Denver with John Elway being a part of the hiring process. A guy who knows a thing or two about offense. Ask the 98 Falcons. But still I went to wait and see. |

Not necessarily, and I don't seriously think he's the worst OC, just not the guy you hire when you want to win in the playoffs when your team can't score an offensive point. He might turn out to be an offensive genius, but if people are going to slam posters for being uncomfortable with the hire, they can't pretend like they think this is some genius hire. No one seriously considered the hire until Dled reported he was on the list, and Dled was laughed at for speculating it. Don't pretend like you did. I've never claimed the sky was falling, I've never claimed to be a football genius, I just don't understand the hire in the context of Arthur Blank's presser. Koetter came in and made the #10 offense in the NFL, the #7th with 2 elite RBs, then regressed each season it to the worst in the league a few years later, apparently offering little in personnel decisions, watching his talent leave, and making terrible draft decisions to replace it (I know that JDR and Smith were responsible, but Koetter was involved). During that time the biggest victories were primarily defensive in nature. All I've ever said was, that if our priority is playoff winning, then this hire makes absolutely no sense. There is nothing in his college or NFL experience that says he can. Maybe he'll prove the doubters wrong, I hope he does. I'm just saying it's more obnoxious to act as if you are on the inside and pretend like this was a genius move, when everyone was as caught off guard as I was. It's more obnoxious than the Chicken littles just venting steam. Normally, I would just say I trust this FO and Smith, but honestly, I've seen so many questionable decisions by Smith the last few weeks, and watching some of Dimtroff's decisions backfire and limit us in our ability to make moves to fill holes, that I don't have tremendous trust in the staff right now. I don't want anyone fired, I want to see Smitty become our Landry of Knoll, but I need to see improvement. I don't see the record of Koetter matching his talk. That concerns me. Luckily the Nolan hire has done a lot to mend some of those concerns, but I still don't trust the hire, and it's okay that I don't. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3CXS04cy...re=related |
