The problem with the Saints defense wasn't as much the personel as it was how they were utilized. They did not fit Spagnuolo's scheme, yet he didn't adjust. Payton implied in his interview today that the defensive players were indeed not be utilized correctly and he was going to address that immediately. I have a feeling Spags is going to get a friendly little lesson on Payton's philosophy very soon.

And the cap will not be an issue. Loomis is perhaps the best in the business at working around the cap. There are a number of contracts that can be restructured and a couple of potential cap hits that can be eliminated. The Saints only need a fair defense to challenge for the division title and having the third place divisional schedule will help.

With the way Rookies start now, and Free Agency has people moving everywhere, strength of schedule from year to year means shit. Ask teams who had to play the 3rd place Seahawks, Bears, Bengals, and Cowboys or 4th place Colts, Skins, and Vikings how lucky they were not to have the 2nd place Jets, Titans, Cardinals, Eagles, Lions, and Chargers on their schedule. They will call you an Ass-Hat.

Strength of Schedule is a crap-shoot, not worthy of discussion till after the season is over. That you hang your hat on it is a desperation move to calm your rational fears of failure.

It's also only 12.5% of the schedule compared to the rest of the division. 14 of the 16 games are against common opponents. Huge advantage there.
