Falcons Hit the damn QB!

RE: Hit the damn QB!
The best solution in our situation would be to improve the interior push we're getting. Contain is great... unless you can't actually disrupt the play from anywhere else, and then you're relying on excellent pursuit and/or coverage by your back 7. IMO, we really need to get that monster DT Knight of God has been wanting for years.

or does your 'code' just mean that last x on the right is the NB, not that you have an extra guy out there?

Whoops, my bad, added an extra linebacker.

Yeah, the QB looks to see what the DE does when deciding what to do on the read option. If a massive devourer-of-souls-and-small-children DT man handles the C and/or G, collapsing the pocket from the interior, this totally screws up the read option and blows the play up.

RE: Hit the damn QB!
it reminds me a lot of the wildcat. That offense is built around one player in one formation. It took an offseason of film study to recognize all the tendencies of the wildcat. Come the following year we knew where the wildcat back was looking and what he was going to do. Smart DCs will study the Read option and see the tendencies of the QB and what choices he makes. The tells the signs and formations will all be there and it will slow down and by the end of the year it will not be a factor.

RE: Hit the damn QB!
I think the best defense is to take the RB away. Don't push the DE upfield, and make the QB keep the ball every play. The entire concept of the read option is the RB gets a lot of yards because people are worried about outside contain...so the offense picks up extra yardage without endangering the QB.

If you say, screw it, you're going to have to keep the ball yourself to get free yardage, the QB becomes a definite runner, and gets teed off on. he may pick up 75 yards in the first half, but he will take hits each play. Don't ever let the offense get yardage because of the "threat" of a QB, make them get it because of an actual QB run.

Essentially, crash the DE inside, and use the OLB/SS to stop the QB. Crush him everytime. Newton may hold up, but most of the others won't, and teams won't want to put their QB in danger that much. (Also agreed that a DT manchild helps radically against this, or any other, offense)

The problem with that is that the QB will have all day to find the open receiver.

Screw it, blitz everyone that isn't covering a receiver or TE! That'll learn 'em!

RE: Hit the damn QB!
No the trick is to stop guessing. Specifically on two plays where Gore scored a rush td each time. Oddly enough Bierman was more discipline in this role than Abe and Nicholas.

They ran the same exact play and both times Abe and Nich ran up the field guessing that Kaep had the ball. if they were to instead stay contained, then Gore wouldn't have had as wide open a lane, but when they stayed contain they should slide their feet slightly left to cover the outside run just in case Kaep kept the ball.

The DE on the side of the running play is the most inportant player on defense.

If he runs up the field guessing the QB has the ball, then the lane is left wide open for the rb to run through with a blocker to block the Safety

If he stays put but too far inside, then the RB is covered but the QB has the outside edge.

Its difficult to do because you're taught to read and react but defending the read option isn't about physical skills, it is solely about intelligence. Nicholas is not a smart player at all and Abe guesses all the time but most of the time he makes the right guess.

Biermann played the read option like a Pro in both playoff games and they realized it and ran away from him for the most part.

RE: Hit the damn QB!
I remember RGIII taking a lot of hits and started throwing his arms up to let the defense know he didn't have the ball anymore so they couldn't hit him. Before that, the team he played was just drilling him.
