Quote:Atlanta Falcons team report: Ryan says he'll take down-field shots when available

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga.—Quarterback Matt Ryan weighed in on the controversy on whether he should throw the ball downfield more often.

Fox TV analyst Jimmy Johnson criticized the Falcons for throwing so many underneath routes against the Bears. Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey said the Falcons won’t force the deep pass.

Ryan is fine with not forcing the ball down the field despite the fact that the Falcons made a big draft-day trade to acquire fleet receiver Julio Jones to couple with All-Pro Roddy White.

“The focus has to be on executing during practice and being prepared so that when opportunities down the field come, we take advantage of them,” Ryan said.

The Bears played their Tampa-2 zone and took away the deep pass. Once the Falcons fell behind, they threw a bunch of check-down and underneath routes when Ryan was able to pass. He was sacked five times and hit 11 times.

Notes: WR Harry Douglas, who suffered a head injury, and fullback Ovie Mughelli, who suffered a knee injury, returned to practice Thursday. Douglas’ injury wasn’t that serious. He said his helmet came up under his eye late in the game and was quickly in and out the league’s concussion protocol. … DT Corey Peters (knee) and White (knee) both fully participated in practice. … CB Christopher Owens (ankle) and C Todd McClure (knee) continued to work with the trainers. … DT Jonathan Babineaux (torn MCL) did not practice and has already been declared out for the game.

So if he's already out of the protocol and practiced fully today, he should be able to go full speed on sunday right?

Good to hear. Even though they have two of the three best coverage corners in Asante and Asomugha, DRC isn't as good as people hype him up to be. PFF had him rated extremely low last year with the Cardinals.
