New Orleans guard Carl Nicks told the New Orleans Times-Picayune that having a first-round tender pretty much made him “radioactive.” He was in the same boat as Grimes and elected to snap up the $2.61 million and worry about the contract extension later.

Grimes has switched agents, dumping the agent he had when former Falcons scout Bruce Plummer found him at Shippensburg and fought for him as an undrafted rookie free agent. After going to the Pro Bowl (after Charles Woodson and Green Bay advanced to the Super Bowl), he hired super-agents Ben Dogra and Tom Condon of CAA.

Grimes must be convinced that someone is going to make a long-term offer that’s better or he’d signed the tender and report to camp.

If Grimes gets an offer, the Falcons can elect to match or receive a first-round pick. The Falcons traded their first-round pick for next year in the Julio Jones deal. (I’m just guess that they’d take the first rounder.)

Under general manager Thomas Dimitroff the Falcons have established a clear track record of “taking care” of their own players. If Grimes accepts the tender, he’d likely be in the front of the line for a contract extension.

This raises a bunch of questions.

1. If Grimes gets an offer do you let him go and take the first rounder or do you match it?

2. Who’s the left corner if he leaves?

3. Do they have enough to make a play for Asante Samuel if Grimes gets an offer?

I'd like to punch D.Led in his cabbage-patch grill. This was a horrible negative slant against Grimes and totally uncalled for.

He can't even practice until Thurs. the 4th, so there's absolutely no reason to sign the tender early and stand around doing nothing. Grimes did a live interview with 790 yesterday and told them he will be in TC on the 4th and likely just renegotiate his contract after game 10 when it is no longer a hit towards the 2011 cap and it goes towards 2012. He's not holding out and he's not ungrateful.

Fucking D.Led can go suck a smelly douche nozzle.

Heard on 790 this morning that grimes may consider holding out until the 20th. Im not sure if its legit, because they couldve gotten that scoop from this d.led article (LOL!).

Either way i think TD will get grimes' contract done. Ledbetters an idiot if he thinks we let grimes walk for a 1st rounder this year. The FO has shown its "superbowl or nothing" this year, and i think everybody knows were not winning a title with franks or owens starting at LCB.

I listened to 790 nearly this entire morning and never heard anything about him holding out. They said he has until the 20th to accept the tender or someone to make an offer and that's it. But nobody said he wasn't going to be at practice on the 4th.

Why would he do an interview just yesterday where he said emphatically that he will be in TC on the 4th, and then suddenly hold out? That isn't how it went down.

I'm almost positive this is Grimes official twitter (jedi can confirm that) and he calls out Dled for the article and says he can't practice till the 4th, and Dled knows that.

Yeah i just heard they got that from this ajc report and grimes snapped back at the ajc for trying to paint him in a bad light. Im really fed up with dled and the bs. The ajc could do so much better and hopefully they realize that...eventually.

D-Led does some stuff that just doesnt make sense ... This one tho..Besides some of the things in the article... I dont have a problem with... Even Grimes said it himself on a radio station.. He thinks he will sign the tender then the falcons will sign him to a longer deal during the season.

The guy will get his long term contract... He deserve it.. But sign the tender and get to camp...

I understand the guy wanting to spend time with his family until he has to sign the tender (on the 4th)
