RE: Get in here KoG
Hey guys. Been a while, but its good to be here. McLendon gained a ton of weight to play NT man. Just his dedication and the type of weight put on is a good indicator of his team first character. I'd take him all day. Franklin has a couple more years, so yeah I'd take him.
A big misunderstanding of the position is that you can make great use of a NT in a 4-3 set by him doing the very same job. He would open it up for the UT and DE's. Look at the front seven. DE NT DE, OLB ILB ILB OLB. Then a 4-3 is LE DT DT RE, WLB MLB SLB depending on the offense at the time. In a hybrid (which is what we use) One of the DE's would slide up into OLB position and merely scoot the guys over. You don't have to have a prototype NT, but you should. Its a minor shift that confuses QB's all day. The NT doesn't HAVE to rush the passer as much as try and push into the center and whichever guard he is over. By putting weight into the gap, the two would focus on the NT and thus two blocks are now eaten. Now the UT/DE would have a one on one in many cases and the RB, FB, and/or TE would then have to focus on blocks instead of getting open. That's the vanilla of it, so yeah...Franklin or McLendon changes the team dynamic. Only McLendon does it longer for us and with less wear and tear. |

Radical now has a hard-on. Control that son. I think both would be a good addition. I believe our DL has had zero competition since it began forming 5 years ago. I also believe that our 4-3 isn't working for this very reason, they are used to just trying to beat their man rather than clog things up. Maybe a new line coach? We haven't seen good development throughout the players.

RE: Get in here KoG
I've warmed to the idea of bringing in a true bigman NT for the reasons KoG stated. There's really no reason a huge 340 lb NT can't also play DT in a 4-3. In fact, on running downs, I think it makes even better sense.
Honestly, after watching UGA this year many times put both Kwame Geathers (359 lbs) and John Jenkins (355 lbs) on the line and then blitz with Jarvis Jones and a couple LB's at the same time, I think it played a huge role in Jarvis getting so many sacks, QB pressures, and TFL's. Whatever we're doing with our 2 300 lb DT's just isn't working. Babs actually knows how to get penetration, so I don't want to see him replaced, but I'd love to see what he can do next to a space-eating double-team magnet next to him. I also think Travian Robertson is going to become something soon. That dude is absolutely massive. By far the strongest guy on the team. Benches like 600 or something close, which is just retarded. He was 308 lbs when we drafted him. He easily has the body to put on another 20 lbs and become a guy who's size and brute strength just requires double-teams or he will throw OL's around like rag-dolls 1v1. But you know how this FO is about developing guys and having a tendency to stick with other guys because they know the schemes better. Hopefully they give him a chance this year. I want to see what he can do. I still would rather draft a guy like Kawann Short for that NT position than get an aged FA. |
